Historia
It was supposed to be just another mission. Buried deep in the rugged Alaskan wilderness lies a secret that could alter the future of mankind - a secret that billionaire Elizabeth Grey has invested millions in solving. But when the dig goes silent, an elite team of battle-hardened military contractors is brought in led by former Marine Max Ahlgren. While the mission to make contact and rescue a team of scientists and engineers working on an “archeological” project seems like an easy payday, once on ground, the team discovers the grizzly truth that this is no ordinary rescue.

Okay concept, gets weird
Revisado: 11-19-22
So this book started out well, mikitary/contract type team sent out to secure a site where a spaceship had been found by a private research group. Cool.
Part way through though the writing changes style and the characters suddenly become stupid. Like the tactical leader who has been thoughtful and cautious about the whole operation suddenly turns into a horn dog and loses all logical capacity to sense danger. The cohesive team starts acting like they only just started working together. The alien tech that all of these linguists and scientists have been studying for however long (but couldn't decipher and there were still a million questions) somehow is navigable for only one person and that doesn't seem suspicious. I haven't finished this book yet, so I can't say if it actually is suspicious or if it's poor writing, but either way all of these men should have red flags going off. Also this weird tech is exceedingly compatible for humans even though they don't understand it?
There is just a lot of conflicting and disjointed things happening, and an completely unnecessary "love interest" that starts and stops without any logical reason. It's weird. I'm going to finish it because I already have it and it was free, but I would be upset if I spent money on this.
The narrator, which I have also listened to before, is fine for this sort of book. But he does have a darkly dramatic style of reading that may not be for everyone.

good conclusion to the series
Revisado: 09-04-22
I really enjoyed this series, I enjoy sci-fi and horror and this fit the bill. It can get a bit predictable at times, a lot of similarities drawn from the other two books, however there was enough new things introduced to keep me listening and looking for more books by this author. I listened to the Siberia Incident first, which got me into these books (they are not related stories) and I am on to a new series by the same author. Overall this entire story is part The Descent, part Journey to the Center of the Earth, mixed with some action, military operations, and Joules Vern references. I would recommend.

Down there, beyond the deepest caves, below the crust and the mantle, there is another world. An old woman locked away in a Russian asylum has a secret - knowledge of a 500-year-old manuscript written by a long-dead alchemist that will show a passage to the mythical centre of the Earth. She knows it’s real because 50 years ago, she and a team travelled there. And only she made it back. Today, caving specialist Mike Monroe leads a crew into the world’s deepest cave in the former Soviet Union.

Perfect adventure/horror combo
Revisado: 08-23-22
This book was right up my alley. It combines real world type adventure with theories like the hollow world, and builds it up. It has a little of "The Descent" mixed with "Journey to the Center if the Earth" and as a biologist myself I also enjoyed listening to the biologist in the book tell the others that they need to pay more attention to things haha

Great monster book, very military heavy
Revisado: 07-24-22
I love a good monster story, and this fit the bill. I'm looking forward to the next I'm the series. I would have liked a bit more backstory on the situation of the monster island, maybe some info on how they got there, however it was written in a journal type of way from a marine so it makes sense for the story. It is set up to maybe give some of that background in the next book.
the performance was really good, reminiscent of RC Bray, whom I really enjoy. The story is written well and most things make logical sense in the context of human behavior.

Historia
100,000 years ago the object hit the lake at the deepest point, quickly sinking into its mile-deep Stygian darkness. The sheets of ice closed, time moved on and the land forgot. But over the centuries, legends grew of people vanishing, of strange, deformed animals and of an unexplained luminescence down in the lake depths. When Marcus Stenson won the lucrative contract to create a sturgeon fish farm on the site of disused paper mill on the shore of Lake Baikal, he thought he had won the lottery and refused to listen to the chilling folktales....

Good story, some discrepancies
Revisado: 04-08-22
I liked the overall story of this book. I like the suspense, I liked the science involved, and the sort of two stories happening between the creatures and the mafia.
The narration was good, not great as there was very little variation in characters, pace, or emotion, but I listened to the whole thing which is more than I can say for some narrators.
What I didn'tike about the story though was that there would be something mentioned and then it was like it just vanished. Towards the climax, the group is discussing fall back positions and one place was mentioned, it sounded like a solid plan but then they just like forgot it was there and almost died because it was no longer part of anything. Also sometimes people would go missing from the camp and for some reason that did not seem concerning to anyone and was never mentioned, like "hm something weirds might be going on as so and so was disappeared last night while another guy saw it happen," nope just pretend it didn't exist.
So if you can get past those little things and just pretend they don't bother you, the book is good. For the most part I enjoyed it.

Miah Gray is a 27-year-old former army soldier living in rural New Hampshire with his sister, mother, and her boyfriend. He is plagued by PTSD, finding solace, but not redemption, with the aid of prescribed cannabis. All he wants to do is get high, relax with a good sandwich, and watch a meteor shower with his neighborhood crush, Jen. Great writing and of course narration
Revisado: 10-29-21
I really liked the writing style of this book. It felt real, relatable and not just an unrealistic depiction of how people react under stress. Of course, RC Bray brings it to life with great personality as well. Didn't know this was the same author as Tribe, which I overlooked in favor of this book but now will have to check out.

I really liked how this book pulled deep beliefs from the old world and stuck it into today's life. This book had some story within a story going on, and isn't exactly a linear story either so it keeps you guessing but does not get confusing. Definitely worth the read.

Slow burn to a creepy finish
Revisado: 12-08-20
This book starts off kind of slow, in that it just follows a couple families having a getaway. However, there are subtle creepy notes that build up on each other until lo and behold, you are gripped in a spiderweb of suspense until the end. This is a good read, perfect for those who like to be sort of scared but not in a gory violence type of way.

Definitely a YA novel
Revisado: 12-06-20
This story felt very YA to me from pretty much the beginning. We are in the future, men and women are divided by a massive river and each sex believes their way of ruling is the better way. the opposite sex is therefore second class and made for very stereotypical roles, such as housewife that shouldn't speak to other men, or husband's that just need to do heavy lifting but are inherently violent and must be subdued.
The protagonist starts out as a strong female role, heads over on a secret mission to man-ville for her Queen, and then promptly falls in love with a brooding cop. The rest of the book is basically her completing her mission while also trying to understand her love feelings and trying to reconcile her mission and her feelings.
I finished this book, which was ok, but the strong female lead was tarnished for me once she started needing a man to save her and help her think.

Breaking new ground in the Expanse-verse
Revisado: 12-06-20
While this book isn't as exciting as the thirst three, it feels like it is an important set up for the next generation of this series.
It begins 30years after book 6, apparently nothing super exciting happened during that time so I'm glad they fast forwarded. Holden and Naomi decide to retire, but of course nothing ever happens according to plan. Bobby comes into her own as a leader, and we finally get to find out what all those Mars Navy ships that took off through a gate have been up to this whole time.
There is some new tech based on the Protomolecule, some underdog stories, and a bit of love story mixed in. I think this book is really just a tie up of the books before it, as it feels like the next book will be focused on a new group of characters now that Holden's team is pushing their years and probably shouldn't be pushing themselves through space stress anymore.
