Historia
It is the 14th century, and one of the most apocalyptic events in human history is set to occur - the coming of the Black Death. History teaches us that a third of Europe's population was destroyed. But what if the plague had killed 99 percent of the population instead? How would the world have changed? This is a look at the history that could have been - a history that stretches across centuries, a history that sees dynasties and nations rise and crumble, a history that spans horrible famine and magnificent innovation.

Intolerable and disappointing
Revisado: 02-28-25
I really tried to like this book. I’ve liked many other KSR novels and the idea here sounded like it could be interesting. Unfortunately it was just not listenable, enjoyable, interesting, or tolerable. A total and disappointing waste of money.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Authentic perspective
Revisado: 02-28-25
A well told perspective of a story of culture and history, life and death, investigation and the search of truth. Fascinating.

Historia
Outlink station Miranda has been destroyed by a nanomycelium, and the very nature of this sabotage suggests that the alien bioconstruct Dragon - a creature as untrustworthy as it is gigantic - is somehow involved. Sent out on a titanic Polity dreadnought, the Occam Razor, agent Cormac must investigate the disaster. Meanwhile, on the remote planet Masada, the long-term rebellion can never rise aboveground, as the slave population is subjugated by orbital laser arrays controlled by the Theocracy in their cylinder worlds.

Not one of Asher’s best
Revisado: 04-14-24
Though part of the Cormac series, he is only a supporting character in this one. Moreover this story never gets out the tedious technical intro phase and never shifts into high gear like Asher’s better books.

Historia
During a war between two planets in the same solar system - each occupied by adapted humans - what is thought to be a cosmic superstring is discovered. After being cut, this object collapses into four cylindrical pieces, each about the size of a tube train. Each is densely packed with either alien technology or some kind of life. They are placed for safety in three ozark cylinders of a massively secure space station.

Interesting stand alone story from a developing author
Revisado: 12-15-23
The dry and technical style both drives and detracts from a thematically complex narrative. While this book can be skipped when exploring Asher, more enjoyment can be had in some of his later releases.

Historia
Neal Asher takes on first contact, Polity style. This original novel recounts the first contact between the aggressive Prador aliens, and the Polity Collective as it is forced to retool its society to a war footing. The overwhelming brute force of the Prador dreadnaughts causes several worlds and space stations to be overrun. Prador Moon follows the initial Polity defeats, to the first draws, and culminates in what might be the first Polity victory, told from the point of view of two unlikely heroes.

It takes a while to get used to the style and reach the point of immersion, but if you make the investment, Prador Moon makes for excellent space opera.

But every once in a while, on a spring day with a breeze, it clears away enough to remind us that there is something more out there. Historia
One man—visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D.—has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming.

Dated already
Revisado: 02-07-23
The overall theme of the story remains salient, however NS’s penchant for using contemporary short half-life details (e.g. COVID, contemporary political memes) to merely provide texture to the story end up disproportionately tarnishing the whole exquisite effort. Hence why extraordinary books such as Seveneves and Anathem are more enjoyable and stand up better over time.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Meh. Is it the story or the performance?
Revisado: 12-01-17
The main character here isn’t really believable. In one way, the reader (whose voice I liked), decided to play the 26 year old like a petulant teenager who just isn’t believable based on her intelligence and resourcefulness and the circumstances of her upbringing. But occasionally I could see the words the reader based her character play on when she decided to play her that way, so it could be weak character development by the author. Also there are some annoying major science oversights in a book that tries to seem “sciencey”. All in all, just Okay, a bit disappointing.

In the style of a timeless story
Revisado: 10-06-17
This is a creative narrative told in the style of the sci-fi from the early and mid-20th-century. I often felt like I was Experiencing a Clifford Simak story. And the narrator does a great job of bringing that to life. This was a good one.
