Historia
Ibn Saud grew to manhood living the harsh traditional life of the desert nomad, a life that had changed little since the days of Abraham. Equipped with immense physical courage, he fought and won, often with weapons and tactics not unlike those employed by the ancient Assyrians, a series of astonishing military victories over a succession of enemies much more powerful than himself. Over the same period, he transformed himself from a minor sheikh into a revered king and elder statesman, courted by world leaders such as Churchill and Roosevelt.

Revisado: 02-13-22
A fascinating dive into the modern history of one of our most important and controversial allies. The story is one of the Son of a once great house who combined a family name, military and political skill to lead Saudi Arabia from a British backwater to economic power, driving force in the Middle East, yet controversial sponsor of terrorism it is today.

Historia
Keith Hernandez revolutionized the role of first baseman. During his illustrious career with the World Series-winning St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets, he was a perennial fan favorite, earning eleven consecutive Gold Gloves, a National League co-MVP Award, and a batting title. But it was his unique blend of intelligence, humor, and talent - not to mention his unflappable leadership, playful antics, and competitive temperament - that transcended the sport and propelled him to a level of renown that few other athletes have achieved.

Don’t waste your time or money
Revisado: 06-06-18
The book stops around 1980. It’s not bad, but I didn’t buy and read a book about Keith Hernandez to get tips on how to fight off an inside fastball. Apparently there’s another potential book deal if this sells well enough, but since he’s making bank as the color commentator for the Mets, I highly doubt it would stray from this boring, self-serving tome. Only Mets fans would find this book interesting.

Historia
At the end of the last century, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was a booming coal-and-steel town filled with hardworking families striving for a piece of the nation's burgeoning industrial prosperity. In the mountains above Johnstown, an old earth dam had been hastily rebuilt to create a lake for an exclusive summer resort patronized by the tycoons of that same industrial prosperity, among them Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and Andrew Mellon.

Very interesting study in the dichotomy of the Civil War's two most famous generals. Focuses less on the battles and tactics than on the respective personalities.

The whole is less than the sum of its parts
Revisado: 07-06-14
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The reader should've familiarized himself with local pronunciations of towns, but otherwise enjoyable.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It's an interesting subject, and the story is reasonably well told.
Any additional comments?
The author seems to have a higher opinion of his writing skill than his talent warrants. It comes across as informative, but as if it were written by a precocious sophomore. The author takes certain liberties with his assertions from time to time, and clearly bungles his facts once or twice. The book would serve as a nice, if somewhat overwrought introduction to Robert E. Lee, but it produces no new scholarship or substance on the topic.

Revisado: 09-13-10
This is one of the best works of social commentary of the 20th century. What "the jungle" did for the meat packing industry, this book should have done for epidemiology. The audiobook flows nicely, bringing Shilts' prose to life. A must read!
