Humour, murder and loss of twists.
Revisado: 09-22-24
Very enjoyable mystery told with humour. The members of the Murder Club still have a lot to give despite their age.

Historia
Slamming the door on the hellscape of 1980s Belfast, Detective Inspector Sean Duffy hopes that the 1990s are going to be better for him and the people of Northern Ireland. As a Catholic cop in the mainly Protestant RUC he still has a target on his back, and with a steady girlfriend and a child the stakes couldn’t be higher. After handling a mercurial triple agent and surviving the riots and bombings and assassination attempts, all Duffy wants to do now is live. But in his final days in charge of Carrickfergus CID, a missing persons report captures his attention.

Twisty
Revisado: 01-08-24
Duffy waxes philosophical a lot, as he finishes up his full time job with Carrickfergus CID.
He has a final case, which is a simple missing person. But of course, being Duffy, it's never simple and everything becomes incredibly complicated. A very good entry in this series. Very well narrated, as always, by Gerard Doyle. Really like the characters in this series and the description of 1980s Belfast and Northern Ireland.

Such fun
Revisado: 11-21-22
Seeing the story through the eyes of Chet, a bright but easily distracted dog, who assists in the investigations of his best friend, Bernie, a private investigator is a lot of fun.
Tricky one to solve even if Bernie is the most incredible investigator in the world. And the brightest. Even if Chet does say so himself.
Wonderful narration.

Richard Sharpe, bold, professional and ruthless, goes to war. Once a private, now he leads his men into action in the bloodiest battle of the war. The danger is as great from his enemies on his own side as from those across the battlefield. But through treachery and gun smoke, through sword fighting and bloody warfare, Sharpe saves his own life and the honour of the regiment.

Very exciting story around the battle of Talavera, which was an unbelievable battle against incredible odds. But in addition, Sharpe's ongoing battle against incompetent, corrupt commanders and their cronies. Wonderful narration.

Historia
It is the spring of 1809 and a small British army is stationed in Lisbon when Marshal Soult begins the French invasion of northern Portugal. No one knows whether the British will fight or leave, but there is little choice for Lieutenant Richard Sharpe and his squad of riflemen, who are sent into the beleaguered city of Oporto to rescue a British mother and daughter who have chosen to stay rather than flee southwards.

Another great story
Revisado: 10-15-22
Cornwell brings this particular part of the Pennisular war to life with a particularly dispicable villain in an officer out for himself and willing to betray anyone to manipulate events to his own advantage.
As usual Sharpe shows his ability.

Finally done!
Revisado: 08-26-22
The story felt a bit too long for me with many of the characters doing unnecessarily complicated things for dodgy reasons. It felt like the story could have been tightened up quite a bit. The story came alive every time the Hodbins entered it.

Historia
The complete finale of the hit BBC Radio 4 sitcom- 2 episodes. Cabin Pressure is set in the wing and prayer world of a tiny, one-plane airline, staffed by two pilots, one on his way down, and one who was never up to start with. In this, the finale of the whole series, we discover that for MJN Air, whether it's choosing an ice-cream flavour, putting a princess in a van or remembering your grandmother's name, no job is too small, but, many, many jobs are too difficult.

Historia
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

A reread with my husband this time. Enough of the details had become a bit blurred so that the story was still enjoyable. A grim nasty time in Belfast.

Good final battlr
Revisado: 04-25-20
Excellent narrator.
Story was fine, but the build up to the whole mess just seemed too predictable... surly apprentice making bad decisions and protagonist not helping much by his decisions. Good magic systems. Nice final battle sequences.

Ruso and Tilla's excitement at arriving in Rome with their new baby daughter is soon dulled by their discovery that the grand facades of polished marble mask an underworld of corrupt landlords and vermin-infested tenements. There are also far too many doctors - some skilled - but others positively dangerous.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Revisado: 01-13-20
This latest entry in the Medicus series was a very enjoyable read. And Simon Vance, as the narrator did a sterling job.
This time both Ruso and his British wife, Tilla are struggling badly to find a place in Rome, and when his ex-commander finds him a fill-in position as a doctor, nothing goes right from the very start. As usual, they're both very quickly involved in a number of mysteries.
It's great watching the growing strength of their relationship and poor Tilla, struggling in vain, to be a "proper" Roman wife.
Great fun to read.
