3 Sixes and a Forked Tongue does an incredible job of pulling you into its world and making you believe every word. The dialogue and diction are so unmistakably West Virginia that it’s easy to forget these are characters in a book and not real people you might meet in a small mountain town. The story takes unexpected turns at every corner, keeping me thoroughly engaged for half of my drive from California back to my home among the hills.

I loved recognizing many of the places described, and in a conversation afterward, the author confirmed the real city that inspired Clockmaker, West Virginia. The story’s originality and pace kept me entertained right to the finish line. After listening, I reached out to the author for a bonus hour of Q&A—it was such a great experience, he should consider including it as part of future editions! Honestly, I’d love to see this story made into a movie someday.

You shouldn’t say nothin’ at all. I can say a few nice things, though. Sarah talks glowingly about her family, and seems to have a certain small-town, traditional charm, evidenced by her use of “s” and “f” as shorthand for quotes including words she’d prefer not speak.

She doesn’t really “speak for herself” in this book. She speaks for Donald Trump a lot, and for her father, and for the plight of black people.

Her performance is so droll I had to speed it to 1.5x just to finish, a first for me - and I listened to Mattis’s book.

She gives a fantastic encore of her time as press secretary, taking painful liberties with the truth that made it difficult to finish. Giving a fair shake to every book I can find of political persuasion, I try to be impartial despite my misgivings about her ability to lie so casually.

Fortunately this book is fairly short. My favorite part is where she describes how she met her husband. She was in charge of his assignments during a political campaign and she happily describes sending him to all the places she would be because he was so good looking. While sweet, I suppose, this kind of action with reversed gender roles - or a different likely audience - would attract a maelstrom of negative attention.

If you’re looking to learn something new about Sarah, America, or the run-up to and aftermath of the election, look elsewhere. This is the same gross sycophancy we had for two years, and I wish I could get my money back.
