Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

I remain a huge fan of Margaret Atwood, but...
Revisado: 11-11-24
I felt like the story was rushed… Aunt Lydia's sudden rush toward redemption without sufficient development of her reasons why?.. Nicole's almost predictable antisocial behavior, felt too easy to come by. Agnes buying into her role as an aunt felt too easy also, given what she knew after reading her files .. the journey to and from Canada seemed to brief, abriviated, and underdeveloped.
It's hard not to compare this novel to its predecessor, considering that its predecessor has been such an important piece of fiction for all of us readers."We" expected the same level of commitment to the details of storytelling as those present in the first novel.
Considering that there is a TV show in the works about The Testaments, it almost felt like Atwood was under pressure to just hurry up and finish this novel. It was overly edited and the ending was such a gigantic shift in time and such a dispassionate summary that I almost felt bored and I've never said that about an Atwood novel ever. She introduces this new character who starts speaking to us and we have no feeling for him whatsoever. We have no idea where he comes from. We're just supposed to surmise from brief clues in his introduction and I felt like the narrator, let us down a little bit with him as well. His voice sounded like such a contrivance.
Considering that the first novel speaks to the anarchist buried in each of us readers, it would've been more satisfying had we been able to take part in witnessing the end of Gilead rather than hear it summarized for us and so briefly.
Would I still recommend this book?
Of course I would it's Atwood and if we are supposed to experience some closure, then s o m e closure is what she's supplied us with.
Generally speaking, she's a gifted writer with incredible insight into the workings of the human mind and behavior,. We should read everything she writes, but I would suggest you adjust your expectations. It's half the novel it should've been ..good in its own way, but not as fleshy. I definitely don't need a cigarette after reading it, but I'm glad I went there with her regardless.

Two days ago, the Wilson family checked into the imposing, glass-fronted Lodge, surrounded by snow and perched perilously on the edge of a cliff looking out to a gray sea. Not everyone was looking forward to the family get-together. But mother-in-law Angela insisted the winter trip would help heal their rifts....

It's centuries since I've seen one single other member of my own species. Oh, there have been others. I've heard of them, chased after them, and in some instances almost found them. Mark, I say almost. But not in centuries have I touched my own flesh and blood, as humans are so fond of saying. Never in all this time....

horrible new orleans accents and mispronounced local words
Revisado: 09-02-24
I am a huge fan of Anne Rice and have met her in person many times and I am sad for her passing, but I am mostly sad for the horrible rendition of Taltos that this narrator presented. She didn't take the time to find out how locals pronounce certain words and she didn't take the time to learn how to speak in a way that was recognizable to a New Orleanian's ear, and as such, she made it impossible to hear Anne Rice's voice over the shrill fake bastardizations of our dear Louisiana accents, of where there are so many beautiful sounds. There were times when she slid from one character to the next without changing the voice at all, and you could hardly tell which character you were listening to. I had to abandon this book part way through because it was so grating on my nerves. RIP Anne.. I am so sorry they did this to your book.

I loved it until I didn't
Revisado: 04-05-24
The narrator is unique and good and really fit the character and I appreciated the lack of contrivance whenever he had to read a female part. The only thing that kept me from giving the story five stars was the way that it ended. Also, too, I can tell I'm not going to be listening to Oracle,2,, because while listening to the sample, I realized that there are waay too many sound effects. I don't like books presented this way I'm not looking for radio show. I'm looking for a book with a story read by a narrator with talent. I would have liked to hear a sequel to this book because it might have given some resolution to the ending of the first one, but I'm not going to sit and listen to all the noise of all the sound effects with multiple narrators. That's not why I come to Audible

terrible book
Revisado: 03-26-24
It was three times longer than it needed to be due to the mountains of descriptions of absolutely everything the writer could pad her wandering, narrative with, as if she thought her readers have no ability to visualize on our own, with a wholly unlikeable, annoying main character that never became someone redeemable, and who relentlessly dragged us through what was ultimately a stupid plot.
The end. Thankgod.

As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

couldn't get through the first chapter
Revisado: 10-28-23
I think part of it was the narration… Switching from one character's voice to the other wasn't distinctive enough, put together with the way it was written, meaning, the transitions in the dialogues were too sudden and didn't always make sense, so it ended up being kind of hard to follow so my attention would wander and after a point, I didn't even know what I was listening to. I plan to return it. The same wasn't adequate enough to express the awkwardness of this reading . I'm sure there's a good storyline in there somewhere but this one could stand a rewrite.. and probably a different narrator.

basically liked it a lot
Revisado: 04-21-23
The narrators were great… Very believable in all the voices used. That's a big deal to me that can make or break up a novel as far as I'm concerned. The story was relatively easy to follow, but when it was all over I had one question remaining and that's what became of the girl in the mirror? What was that all about that sounded like it was going to go somewhere and then it just didn't? It didn't seem to tie into the rest of the story very well… Kind of felt like that part could've been edited out and it wouldn't have hurt a thing. I would have liked to have a little bit more backstory on Clara and how she came to be there, but overall it was interesting and kept me engaged. It's been a while since I've gotten some thing from Audible that I actually wanted to listen to besides podcast so this was a Lucky find in that regard. i'd recommend it if you know where the reason then to listen to talented narrators!

hilarious
Revisado: 08-26-22
So if your creepy neighbor got you to come in his house and lie down on his sofa for a "I can help you lose weight. I'm a hypnotist" session, this is what he would sound like. I had to suppress my sarcastic jokey comebacks to some of the "affirmations", but honestly, some of them were pretty funny. I especially loved the scifi outter space background music. It put me to sleep in under five minutes. I woke up hungry though so not sure it worked for me. Thank the gods this was a freebee.

The narration was just a little heavy handed.I found myself feeling irritated the whole time I was trying to listen, so the story never really got off the ground for me. A little to cockney perhaps.
