Historia
Only days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tapped Chester W. Nimitz to assume command of the Pacific Fleet. Nimitz transformed the devastated and dispirited Pacific fleet into the most powerful and commanding naval force in history. Facing demands from Washington to mount an early offensive, he had first to revive the depressed morale of the thousands of sailors, soldiers, and Marines who served under him. And of course, he also confronted a formidable and implacable enemy in the Imperial Japanese Navy.

This should have been an essay!
Revisado: 10-16-22
Having read and admired Craig Symonds's writing and historical accounts of the War in the Pacific, I anticipated an insightful and interesting perspective on Nimitz's handling key issues.
That's not quite what was delivered. The character traits and leadership qualities could be summarized in several pages. Instead they were repeated throughout with little additional information. The other commanders were so two dimensional in description and the scenarios offered so barely presented, that they added little in the way in the development of lessons learned.
My recommendation is to read Ian Toll's trilogy on the Pacific theatre for a better description of Nimitz and the complexities of the battles. Symonds's book lacks context on the logistical and planning aspects that would have been key to Nimitz's decision making.

Historia
A young Swedish immigrant finds himself penniless and alone in California. The boy travels East in search of his brother, moving on foot against the great current of emigrants pushing West. Driven back again and again, he meets naturalists, criminals, religious fanatics, swindlers, Indians, and lawmen, and his exploits turn him into a legend. Diaz defies the conventions of historical fiction and genre, offering a probing look at the stereotypes that populate our past and a portrait of radical foreignness.

Overhyped- better if it was a novella
Revisado: 05-30-22
Character development was so slight. The story was so crammed with superfluous detail that didn’t add much.

Historia
In May 1941 the German battleship Bismarck, accompanied by heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, broke out into the Atlantic to attack Allied shipping. The Royal Navy's pursuit and subsequent destruction of the Bismarck was an epic of naval warfare. In this new account of those dramatic events at the height of the Second World War, Iain Ballantyne draws extensively on the graphic eyewitness testimony of veterans to construct a thrilling story, mainly from the point of view of the British battleships, cruisers, and destroyers involved.

Others have explained the demise of battleships better
Revisado: 09-23-20
There was nothing compelling or significant to the added history of the sinking of the Bismarck and battleships in general. So many others have covered this subject better, in terms of armaments, strategies, logistical support, air warfare on ships, and the rise of aircraft carriers, to the completion of battles and wars.
If you read nothing else read The Price of Admiralty by John Keagan or even an antecedent like Dreadnaught by Massie.

From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

Having read the sensational book Bad Blood, this book by Tyler Shultz gave color and depth to the personal impact of this scandalous enterprise called Theranos. His fortitude is commendable.

Had he used a co-writer to extract more dimension and to have improved the writing the experiences would have been more compelling.
Great lessons, which I believe was Admiral McRaven’s real intention.

Would have been better if the chapters were in order
Revisado: 11-14-18
The disappointment was in managing the chapter disorder of this Audible edition. The Preface was followed by chapter 8-13, reverting to chapter 1-7, then on to the remainder of the book.
Without the glossary of names, included in the printed version, it would’ve been much harder to track.
This account is just that, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions. It spurred me to read the accounts by the key players as well as texts describing the fundamental problems, alternatives, and other crisi replays.

Robert Timberg weaves together the lives of Annapolis graduates John McCain, James Webb, Oliver North, Robert McFarlane, and John Poindexter to reveal how the Vietnam War continues to haunt America. Casting all five men as metaphors for a legion of well-meaning if ill-starred warriors, Timberg probes the fault line between those who fought the war and those who used money, wit, and connections to avoid battle.

Revealing in scope and detail. This book was recommended to me by a good friend and history buff.

The revelations come not from the well researched findings but from the context of "seasoning" experienced by the 5 featured Vietnam vets.
It was thoroughly impressive and fascinating.
