Would you consider the audio edition of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich to be better than the print version?

I loved this audible version, it allowed me to enjoy a long book in parts, listening during my all to few few free moments. I have wanted to read this book since middle school, back in the days of the dinosaurs, and this version made it possible. I did not have to lug a large book about but instead I carried this monumental work of investigatory journalism in a small mp3 player, how cool is that?!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Can you image that history may be repeating itself? When Hitler invaded Russia he first attacked Crimea and the Ukraine! Hitler wanted Crimea for it oil and the Ukraine for its food. Today we see Russia attacking Crimea and the Ukraine, we are seeing weak leaders in Europe attempting to appease a strong aggressor, etc., etc.

Any additional comments?

This is an unprecedented look at the history of Hitlers madness and folly. Lets just hope and pray that Vladimir Putin is not as crazy as he seems.

Katrina's Deadly Affect on One Hospitlal

What did you love best about Five Days at Memorial?

I was blown away by the story of courage and sacrifice represented in this valuable look at the affects of Hurricane Katrina upon one hospital and its staff. I was devastated by the conclusions of forensic experts of murder and euthanasia delivered by a few Health Experts. This is an intense and honest story of the human condition under extreme stress and fear. It is told in a non-biased presentation that left me somewhat conflicted.I highly recommend this book!

What did you like best about this story?

I especially appreciated the strength of character, the self sacrifice and the sense of responsibility for those unable to care for themselves. This is a story revealing the pinnacle of selflessness and courage in the face of unthinkable devastating conditions. In the light of seemingly insurmountable barriers a small group of professionals sought out answers and implemented difficult solutions.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene I especially enjoyed was the successful conclusion of the transportation of the first evacuees, tiny infants, preemies, from Memorial Hospital. It was thought that they would not survive the evacuation but for the work of volunteers they were saved!

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

The fear of the lawlessness outside, outside of the walls of this tiny enclave, was palpable. I can not imagine forgetting very soon those scenes that produced such terror in the hearts and minds of the health specialists dedicated in saving those who could not care for themselves.

Any additional comments?

For those who love the back story of major events, this is a must. This will leave you breathless and at times proud of those individuals working for a common cause in the face of such insurmountable problems.

An Unorthodox Look at Jesuis Christ

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

In the early part of the fourth century in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea under Emperor Constantine Orthodoxy (meaning "Right Thinking") was established for the first time in the history of the Christian Church and imposed upon it's members. With the development of "Right Thinking" Heresy (meaning "Choice" and used in the sense of "...you choose to abandon Truth") was defined and outlawed.

But even later under the threat of death (Capital punishment for Heresy was established under two later emperors) this did not stop individuals from daring to seek God and the Bible to understand the Nature of God and His Christ for themselves. Rome was later overthrown by Barbarians from the North who had rejected the Orthodox teachings of the Trinity and who had embraced an "Heretical" teaching that was brought to them by missionaries from the region of Antioch sometime in the second century. Antioch, you may remember, was Paul and Barnabas' center of operations (The Book of the Acts of the Apostles) and for a short time after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. it was the center of the Christian Church.

Heresy was later pronounced dead in the seventh century. It showed up again in the 10th century in the Holy Catholic Church during the Eucharist Controversy and was severally dealt with by the Pope. It was revived in the Reformation and was embraced by many of the "Radical" Reformers.

As late as Isaac Newton (17th century) individual continued to challenge Orthodoxy under the threat of death. Most of our countries founding fathers rejected the imposition of Orthodoxy and set out to establish a land free from religious oppression and they sought freedom to serve and worship God as they saw fit.

Professor Bart Ehrman of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an Historian, New Testament Textual Critic and Theologian and is the next major scholar to challenge Orthodoxy. This book represents his efforts to understand the scriptures in the light of early christian thought. I do not agree with his Theology but I find his Historical views, his research into the Greek Manuscripts and the insights he brings forward from his understanding of the Greek language to be enlightening. I highly recommend this book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book represents Prof Ehrman's personal search for cohesiveness in New Testament revelation. Many of today's scholars see the New Testament books as representative of an evolution of thought and teachings of God and His Christ. They see the Pauline Scriptures as representative of an early or primitive Christology whereas John's Gospel, written about three decades after Paul's letters, representative of a High Christology.

Some will find the challenge to Orthodox teaching a threat and may experience a strong visceral reaction to that challenge. This book represents his search and findings and I believe that we can all be enriched by the questions posed and the historical research represented in this tome.

This is a must for those who seek a further and deeper understanding of the New Testament revelation of God and Jesus Christ. This brings to the level of the average Christian, the non-academic, the discussions and arguments from academia on this vital topic. I do not agree with Prof Ehrman but I appreciate his life's work and I want to benefit as much as possible from it.

Lot's of Fun, this is how we should power rockets.

Would you listen to The Rowan again? Why?

Yes, This is a fun Fantasy. I really enjoyed the story of the Rowan. Her childhood is presented as believable. Her young adult life is also believable. Buy it and enjoy it.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the person of the main character. I liked how she stepped up to the danger of an alien invasion. Her solution to the problem that the whole Solar System faced is wonderful.

What about Jean Reed Bahle’s performance did you like?

Extraordinaire abilities. There is a tragic death scene and Ms Bahle does an excellent job convening the effects upon the lives of this fantasy population. Again it is very believable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed a lot and it is very hard to place down and put aside for later.

This is a fun fantasy! Enjoy it and get a break from today's hard paced life.

A Fantastic Historical Fiction set in Middle Ages

What was one of the most memorable moments of Outlander?

I personally love srories that involve Time Travel and I love stories about the History of the Dark Ages, this book hit on both topics. Once you get past our heroine's life just after WWII and the fantasy of the time travel you find a wonderful story of the day to day life in that time period. Our hero must learn to live in a day and age when a woman's voice and her presence is not even acknowledged, life under clan ruled society, the brutality of ancient warfare, the dangers of life outside of a castle, and herbel medicine as opposed to anti-bacterials.

There is a place in the story where our heroine's abilities concerning bandaging the wounded is acknowledged and she is asked to take over for the man who no longer acted as a healer. The author describes the scene that she found when she first walked into the healing center. She found hebs, animal dung and noxious mixtures that she could not even hope to identify instead of the modern day medice she was acquinted with during WWII. It was a powerful juxtaposition to her days working with the wonded of WWII and finally to our pesent day medicine.

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

This is a very good performance.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The discription of the brutal life during the Middle Ages without the access to modern medicine, the discription of life without the rule of law and the access to police help, the absense of equality under the law is a harsh existence and it is amazing that anyone lived through it. Society has come a long way towards the protection of the weak, the poor and the disenfrancised, but we still have a ways to go.

This is definately a Mature Audience book. Even so not only did I buy a copy for myself but I purchased two more to give as gifts.

I Loved this One!

Would you listen to The Modern Scholar again? Why?

Yes, there is so much interesting material gleamed from some of the most persuasive people in the history of mankind, one listen is definately not enough. Just listening to the diction of Dr. Drout is a treat and an inspiration to strive for more.

What other book might you compare The Modern Scholar to and why?

This was my second introduction to the Modern Scholar series, this is a profound series and worth the time to explore the titles available to the listener.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

I was introduced to some very persuasive material from Martin Luther King. This inspired me to dig further on my own, looking to see how that man continued to use the skills that won him followers to his ideas. However, I do not think that I will fill my mouth with pebbles in an attempt to work on my own enunciation as Dr. Drout wistfully recalls from the 5th century BC Greek father of rhetoric, Gorgias.

An Incursion into the Paranoid

What did you like best about The Traveler? What did you like least?

The beginning of the book is an exciting Travelog through Europe where a young lady is searching for her elusive father. She becomes drawn into a life she sought to leave behing her (Echos of the Godfather?). However she becomes a unforgetable selfless warrior.

Any additional comments?

I was not happy with the presentation of varius Christians as desirable visious enforcers, more desirable than your everyday Mercs.

Not a Difficult Storyline but Enjoyable Listen

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the scene when our reluctant hero, mild mannered Chicago resident, recently abducted from Earth, discovers that the stray dog he just met can talk and even has a better vocabulary.

Could you see Lost and Found being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

This is not a mind teaser, it is just an easy read and fun to listen to.
