Historia
Begin Again is one of the great books on James Baldwin and a powerful reckoning with America’s ongoing failure to confront the lies it tells itself about race. Just as in Baldwin’s “after times,” argues Eddie S. Glaude Jr., when white Americans met the civil rights movement’s call for truth and justice with blind rage and the murders of movement leaders, so in our moment were the Obama presidency and the birth of Black Lives Matter answered with the ascendance of Trump and the violent resurgence of white nationalism.

Revisado: 03-15-24
Often, as moving and as powerful as Baldwin’s writings. No time to sit back and decry our fate. I only hope I act on my feelings now and how this book has inspired me to do something, anything, Now is the moment that calls us.

Historia
At once a powerful evocation of his early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice to both the individual and the body politic, James Baldwin galvanized the nation in the early days of the civil rights movement with this eloquent manifesto. The Fire Next Time stands as one of the essential works of our literature.

Speechless
Revisado: 01-31-24
I’m amazed even time time I hear/read this book, or anything by Mr. Baldwin. It all seems so obvious…but no one sees it or states it as clearly and as urgently as he did. Can we hear him at all? I don’t know; I sadly don’t know.

Historia
Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted. But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told, she's beginning to miss London. And then the Trehearnes come to stay. The strange story they tell about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married fascinates Susan and piques her editor's instincts.

Hawthorn is better
Revisado: 01-05-24
Entertaining but I prefer the Hawthorn series . I found the book inside the book more interesting—Susan’s reveal at the end took too long and her epiphanies were a bit too out of the blue.

Modern sensibilities
Revisado: 12-21-23
I love many of A. Horowitz’s novels, especially the The sentence is Murder, etc series. I have never read Ian Fleming’s Bond novels and have seen only 1 or 2 of the movies years and years ago… so I approached this book with no real expectations… I am very glad that Mr. Horowitz did not adjust his Bond character to fit our “modern sensibilities.” I think we need such reminders of mindsets that reduced women to objects and foreigners to often negative stereotypes… unfortunately such mindsets—here in the USA, seem to be on the upsurge. I think it is wonderful that the Bond novels meant so much to a young Horowitz; any work that is so inspiring is, in my opinion, a masterpiece—but I find that a 007-type hero is simply just not my cup of tea. My belief that A. Horowitz is an amazing writer and storyteller remains intact!🤗

Vocal Power!!!!
Revisado: 06-02-23
I first became aware of Lake Bell about 2 years ago when I was searching for Simon Pegg movies and found “Man Up.” Ms. Bell’s performance, smile, and voice blew me away!!! I’ve since watched, and loved, “In a World.” Loved the book, Bell’s passion for her subject and the thrill of possibilities in store for me, a 71-year-old grandma from Iowa, in discovering and learning at long last to be proud of my voice , and to treasure more than ever voices& sounds of my children and grandchildren. I think “Inner Voice” is an important book and that there should be an “Inner Voice 2”!!! And, P.S. my kids love my new voicemail message!!! Thank you Lake Bell!!! P.P.S Maybe book 2 could feature Christopher Walken, Robert Glenister (awesome narrator of Cormoran Strike books… he is the best male narrator that I’ve heard for his many accents and ability to sound like a woman of any age!) , the late(s?) Bette Davis & Leonard Cohen… or differences between singing and speaking voices.. Freddie Mercury (I think a big difference) and Adele ( not such a difference?? love, love her singing and her speaking voices!!!!)

Historia
In this searing memoir, Congressman Jamie Raskin tells the story of the forty-five days at the start of 2021 that permanently changed his life—and his family’s—as he confronted the painful loss of his son to suicide, lived through the violent insurrection in our nation’s Capitol, and led the impeachment effort to hold President Trump accountable for inciting the political violence.

Beautiful. I feel inspired
Revisado: 01-22-22
I’ve just finished listening to this remarkable book. And am struck, more than I was at the time of the riot, at how fragile this democracy is and how that fragility is increasing. Rule by the minority is the goal. Also learning about Tommy Raskin was a gift. What a precious soul. Thanks to Congressman Raskin and his family for sharing him with us.
