All fighting, no story

This book had lots of frenetic action as a group battles through a Spire dungeon, but there was very little plot or character development, and little reason to care whether they lived or died.

This was probably my least favorite Andrew Rowe story, and I doubt that I will try the follow up books.

Awesome Narration/Painful Dialog

I love this series overall, but this installment was my least favorite so far. The incessant hating on Jim by all of the side characters, particularly Princess Julia, was vastly overdone. The narration was spectacular and kept me listening, and I really hope the next book has more story and less scoffing at The Mayor.

It is a good concept, but not well executed. After a while it felt like a repetitive slog through an endless dungeon, with minimal character or story development. I started skipping big chunks of the book and never felt like I was missing anything. The narrator was excellent as always though. Still, I don't think I will be continuing on to the next book in the series.

Both this series and The Good Guys series are two of my all time favorites in this genre. Pure brain candy!

Lots of fun, with a good balance between fight scenes and storyline. Sound effects tend to be more of a distraction than a compliment to the story, but the narrators are fabulous as always. I highly recommend this series.

I have never hated a book so badly. The writing is awkward, clumsy and juvenile. The MC is so consistently stupid yet overconfident that that it quickly gets frustrating and only gets worse as the story progresses. The story has promise, but it's execution is definitely not worth the effort to endure.

I wanted to enjoy this book and I did enjoy its premise, but the MC was such a whiney little be-otch, particularly in the first half of the book, and it got to be very difficult to listen to his long angsty emo rants. This guy's supposed to be a brilliant, logic-driven physicist, but he acts like a little frat-boy snowflake. I hope the author does better on the sequel.

I am really enjoying this series so far, and I'm really looking forward to the next installment. The story is engaging and well written, and Nick Podehl is brilliant as the narrator as always. On the other hand, the MC seems to be relying far too much on his high Luck stats in this book rather than on any kind of skills or strategy. The old phrase, "better lucky than good" sums up Dakon's story completely thus far. He stumbles around the game world making consistently stupid decisions while insulting kings and gods alike with churlish impertinence - sometimes to the point of cringe worthiness - yet he always seems to prevail no matter the odds against him. Dumb luck indeed!

I wanted to like this series, I really did; even knowing that it was mainly targeted at 13 year old girls and I stuck with it clear to the end hoping for a miracle, but in the end the entire series left me frustrated and annoyed.

To give the book its due, the writing was fairly crisp. and the action sequences were frequent and well crafted. I also thought the narrator did an excellent job. But the story itself was atrocious nonsense. The M.C., Cari Dix, was constantly aggressively rushing into hopeless situations without any plan because Girls Rule!!!, and then slaughtering everyone in sight and escaping by the skin of her teeth because "all men are stupid" or something. And while the evil Duke ruthlessly eliminates everyone in his way, his men only ever capture and restrain people in Cari's party so she can later show up and rescue them at the last moment by slashing and stabbing everyone in sight.

Finally, I applaud the author's effort to create a fantasy series with a female protagonist, but Cari comes across as just an angry, petulant murder-hobo, entitled to slaughter with righteous fury anyone who gets in her way or slow her down in her quest to do whatever she feels entitled to do. ...And these were supposed to be real people in a real world she was killing, not just some NPCs in a game.

At the very end Cari has a rare reflective moment with her father that goes something like, "Daddy, sometimes I feel bad about the thousands of mostly innocent people that I massacred during my travels." To which her father wisely counsels, "Yeah, me too. But when my conscience starts getting to me, I just go for a run or I just tell myself that they all deserved to die, and then I feel better." "Oh, thanks daddy. That helps. Let's go home and get some ice cream!" What a wonderful, heartwarming message to leave as the moral of the story. /s
