Surprisingly enjoyable by the numbers, rock memoir
Revisado: 02-24-25
I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of Michael McDonald’s nor do I even own a single record, but because his voice was so ubiquitous in my youth (born 1971), and because of my recent affinity for yacht rock,I felt I would give this a listen. It exceeded my expectations while definitely avoiding being trashy and focused on gossip. This particular book also benefits very much from the audiobook format. Despite his struggles with alcohol and drugs – which I had absolutely no idea about – I find found him very cogent, very genuine, and incredibly likable.

Historia
A book inspired by a lifelong appreciation of the music that borders on obsession, Rich Cohen’s fresh and galvanizing narrative history of the Rolling Stones begins with the fateful meeting of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on a train platform in 1961 - and goes on to span decades, with a focus on the golden run - from the albums Beggars Banquet (1968) to Exile on Main Street (1972) - when the Stones were at the height of their powers.

Entertaining bio of Stones focused on years through Exile
Revisado: 01-15-25
The book has a nice flow, even though it is very much in the new journalism vein. It focuses more on personalities than the architecture of the music, but does give a good overview of the band. Even though it focuses largely on the years 64 through 72. It does take the story up until the 2010s with what feels like an extended epilogue. A very serviceable, if light, biography of the band, told through the perspective of a Rolling Stone writer who has had many interviews with them.

Historia
The narrative of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy has been told from many points of view, most significantly in the wave of books exploring the Warren Commission's findings and the conspiracy theories that followed. But for journalist Steven Beschloss, the story of Lee Harvey Oswald began with the troubled bond with his mother.

Author does not push an agenda but rather, lays out the facts and events of LHO’s life, no doubt fueled by the bizarre and narcissism of his strange mother. Highly recommended.

Historia
Perhaps the most notorious American murderer of the 20th century, Charles Manson's legacy extends far beyond his horrific crimes. As the wild-eyed, swastika-tattooed, nightmarishly charismatic leader of the Manson Family, he was convicted of the brutal killings of nine people in 1971, including the Tate-LaBianca murders of seven in Los Angeles over two hot August nights in 1969.

A decent, balanced, succinct complete bio/overview of Manson
Revisado: 12-30-24
Not as sensational as I had anticipated. And not a collection of interviews, as I had expected. Instead, it’s a relatively cogent, balanced, if paint-by-number bio of Manson, 80% focused on 1969-1970, as you’d expect. Benefits from being published in 2019, so it covers the complete arc of Manson’s life. Steers clear of the conspiracy whirlpool that consumed the second half of the book, “Chaos.” Why is it called the Manson Tapes? The last 40 minutes or so is a well acted reading of a transcript of one of Manson’s last interviews with someone who feels a little too patronizing. Interesting but nothing revelatory.

Historia
In this thoughtful, inspiring, and deeply personal book, comedian, actor, and father Michael Ian Black gets (mostly) serious about the trouble with masculinity. In the form of a heartfelt letter to his college-bound son - but with ideas sure to resonate for many parents - he reveals his own complicated relationship with his father, explores the damage caused by the expectations placed on boys to “man up”, and searches for the best way to help his son be part of the solution, not the problem, in a world in which the word masculinity now goes hand in hand with “toxic".

Historia
The basis for the cult-classic film The Warriors chronicles one New York City gang's nocturnal journey through the seedy, dangerous subways and city streets of the 1960s. Every gang in the city meets on a sweltering July 4 night in a Bronx park for a peace rally. The crowd of miscreants turns violent after a prominent gang leader is killed and chaos prevails over the attempt at order. The Warriors follows the Dominators trying to make their way back to their home territory without being killed.

Very different from film. Start with afterword (last chapter) to better appreciate the book.
Revisado: 09-24-24
Not bad, just different. You won’t really recognize the same characters if you’re a fan of the film. The overall scenario is similar, but the incidents along the way are quite different and much more violent and sadistic in the book. Not only is the name of the gang different – in the novel they are the Coney Island Dominators – the gang is made up of only teenagers. The final chapter, Sol Yurick’s 2003 afterword, really puts things in perspective. I strongly suggest starting with the lengthy author afterword (last chapter of audiobook) before starting the novel.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Exceptional short stories and novellas without traditional monsters
Revisado: 09-09-24
The theme across these stories is largely “Grief” and “No good deed goes unpunished.” A refreshing collection for those wary of vampires and killer clowns. You will find that many are stressful and quite unsettling, but that’s what you would expect from Stephen King. That said, I think the stories contain some of the more insightful and multilayered characters, with distinct lessons to be learned. They will stay with you for quite a while. And as always, Will Patton is the best interpreter and the only reader I’ve ever heard who could do a genuine Downeast Maine accent correctly.
