I decided to purchase this book shortly after watching a few of the episodes on Netflix. While there are some creative differences between the show and the novel, I felt they were done nicely.

This was a splendid romance story up until the very end. The controversial scene in which our two newlyweds are immersing in a drunken coupling after quarreling for days completely changed my perspective of the entire book, and inevitably my opinion of Mrs. Daphne herself.

While I suppose Simon could have been a little more upfront and distinct with his new wife about his horrid upbringing and his desire to remain without any children, I feel his character was done even worse by allegedly the only person to show him, true love.

Daphne knew very well what she was doing in the moment. She made a conscious decision and adamantly defiled her own marriage. She knew her husband was either drunk or barely awake and carried on to have sex with him regardless.

At least in the show, it could be perhaps mistaken for an accident on dear chaste Daphne's part. After all, she was enthralled in the moment. Show Daphne also was unaware of just how horrible the duke's childhood was until after committing the act and seemed to show a bit of understanding after discovering some facts about her husband.

Book Daphne's lack of remorse bothered me greatly. Her character actually goes on to mention how she isn't sorry for her actions and it literally drives me mad with irritation.

If the roles were reversed it would be outrageous.

I thoroughly enjoyed Stephen Fry's reimagining of Greek mythology! This was a phenomenal book! It included several familiar myths, introducing the infamous gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus. I particularly liked learning about the theogony of the primordial gods and the Titans, deities that are less talked about and are actually quite responsible for the ancient world's creation story. I learned numerous new things from this novel, including the myth of the honeybee, the horrific tale of Marsyas, and the amusing tale of Arion and the Dolphin. This book was exceptionally insightful for anyone looking for a further understanding of Greek Mythology. Absolutely amazing!

This book is absolutely stunning. Not only does Zimmerman shed light on the patriarchal influence sowed within our most beloved myths and legends, but she also brings notice to how these same sentiments are impacting the way we as a society view women to this day. I enjoyed this novel for so many reasons. One being, I love Greek mythology, the other being never have I ever came across an author more relatable and honest than the creator of this narrative. There were moments while reading this I had to put the book down and gather my emotions, realizing that I had been in similar situations and that I suddenly felt this immense consolation in knowing I was no longer so deserted in my thoughts towards self-image and past entanglements. I definitely recommend this book to any and all.

A Great Read

This story was very impressive! Unlike all other retellings of the Illiad, The Silence of the Girls really emphasised the true ugliness of the Trojan war. All of the great heroes, Achilles, Hector, Ajax, are stripped of their heroism and shown in a new light, a more pragmatic light.

From the very beginning, you are swept away into an ancient world, a world under attack. The narrator of this book did an excellent job capturing the mood of Briseis and telling her muffled tale.
