Historia
Some of the smartest commentary about what’s happening in America is coming from a comedian—this comedian being Bill Maher. If you want to understand what’s wrong with this country, it turns out that one of the best informed and most thought-provoking analysts is this very funny pothead.

The Funny Guy who makes a living complaining
Revisado: 08-29-24
Bill is a funny guy. He has been for a very long time. I realize as I listened to the book that he is especially good at funny complaining.
For example: Bill thinks politics should be left to professionals! Not morons like former President Trump. He has a very serious case of Trump Derangement syndrome. iI TDS were COVID...he'd be on a respirator hoping to get treatment with Ivermectin--now FDA approved for more than Horse deworming;-) Trust the science Bill.
The problem is the professional politicians are not good at their jobs. California USE to be "the golden state". Now...not so much. Governor Newsom pledged to end homelessness when he was the Mayor of San Francisco. Then he got to be Governor and his state--per capita--now has the most homeless people in the nation.
Professional Politician Hillary Clinton has a lot of experience but no real successes--can anyone name an accomplishment from her Secretary of State days? No? Not surprising. Holding a job isn't the same as doing a good job. "We killed Kaddafi" is not an accomplishment. What it did accomplish was to turn Libya into the largest SLAVE MARKET in the world today. The list goes on but let's leave it there.
We really don't want "professional" politicians. I'm no fan of AOC but I'm glad she was a bar tender. Real world stuff.
Nancy Peloci missed her calling as a fund manager--beating out every fund manager including Warren buffet in her investment hobbies. She must be really smart or...have information that other investors don't have. I forget what they call that. Insider trading?
Bill says regulations in California are out of control and make building public toilets unaffordable because of all the regulations. Regulations created and/or approved by...you got it...professional politicians.
Climate change? It use to be called global warming...but then the warming thing is hard to track (google it for yourself). I'm from Michigan and learned as a 3rd grader that the state was covered with 2 miles of ice a long time ago. When it melted , it created the great lakes. Did carbon fuels do that?
When the global warming committee members before the US Senate were asked if we did what they wanted in the budget ($XX Trillion in spending) how much would the temperature drop? The answer was "we don't know". Even sillier, when asked the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere today (the thing that is supposed to be causing global warming), none of the professionals on the panel knew. The answer is .04%. I think that's kind of an important point if climate change and reducing CO2 in the atmosphere is your job. I could be wrong...but seems applicable.
Bill says we need to make less people because we don't have enough water or food on the planet. Elon Musk, on a recent show with Bill, said that's wrong. Desalination is easy and cheap! We have all the water we need. But Elon likely isn't as smart on this as Bill or the professional politicians in California.
Growing 1 almond in California requires 1.1 gallons of water. That's 1 single almond. But California--struggling with water availability--produces 80% of the almonds in the world. I'm guessing almond growers in California donate re-election money to California professional politicians. Why wouldn't they?
Illegal immigration--well Bill sounds like he's for it because--what a racist if he's not. But illegal immigration depresses wages, puts real stress on cities to handle the influx of new people, many illiterate in their own language, and increases violent crime dramatically. And it does this EVERYWHERE it happens. Just ask Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and more.
All that said, Bill is a very funny complainer. And the book is entertaining. I think you will like it!

Historia
What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for aging spies who can no longer remember their secrets are secret? Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Bad Description: Gay men falling in love
Revisado: 10-03-23
I bought the book because the desciption sounded good and Achilles is a famous character we have all heard about.
What you get is a Gay love story. Which is fine if you advertise it that way. But don't make me think about the Achilles Brad Pitt played and then give me the Gay Blade.

Pure Propaganda! Truly a horror show book.
Revisado: 09-28-23
I bought this book to learn about Xi Jinping. Instead it's a propaganda piece--telling the reader that China gets everything right and the West gets it all wrong--from COVID, to economies, to government system...you'll own nothing and like it!
This is a country that's only Social Media communication is WeChat. That's it. Why no LINE, VIBER, SKYPE, etc. I don't think you need to wonder why.
The author is the definition of a sycophant.
I hoped for a good book. I got a POS.

Not as good as other McCammon stories
Revisado: 05-11-23
This book was a bit of a disappointment. The lead character is not likeable. Most of the "Vietnam Vet" dialog is a warn road. Ending ties it up well but a lot of OK story to get to a semi-satisfactory ending.

On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. Lee writes nicely but Scott Brick makes every sentence sound like the most important words ever spoken. Including "I'd a coffee". "It seems cold outside". Think menacing tone all the time. Yikes...finally could take it.

Ever wonder what you would say or do if you didn’t give a f--k? Adam Carolla can tell you. In his sixth book, the comedian, podcaster, and provocateur does what he does best—doles out advice and opinions with utter disregard for our politically correct, self-righteous, virtue signaling, woke times.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Not sure "Greenlights" is the magical word Matt thinks it is...but clearly it's served him well. I enjoy nearly all of his movie performances but they don't translate to the written word from the screen.
