Heinz Knoke was one of the outstanding German fighter pilots of the Second World War. This vivid firsthand record of his experiences has become a classic among aviation memoirs and is a fascinating counterbalance to the numerous accounts written by Allied pilots.

Historia
After Germany's humiliating World War II defeat, numerous German generals published memoirs claiming that their country's brilliant military leadership had been undermined by the Führer's erratic decision making. The author of three highly acclaimed books on the era, Stephen Fritz upends this characterization of Hitler as an ill-informed fantasist and demonstrates the ways in which his strategy was coherent and even competent.

Interesting perspectives of WW2.
Revisado: 06-30-24
It does a decent job of revealing interesting perspectives of WW2, though it did seem to sometimes miss the mark in its characterizations of WW1. The absolute destruction and suffering wrought by the first war played an important role in the 2nd. The causes were also quite different.

Historia
On December 16, 1944, Hitler launched a massive surprise attack on the Allies: the Battle of the Bulge had begun. Planned by the Germans with the utmost secrecy, the battle was one of the largest and bloodiest fought by the United States in World War II. Near complete surprise crippled the Allied line early on, but fierce resistance and massive air attacks ultimately gave Allied forces the edge. Had Hitler's gambit succeeded, a German victory in the war would have certainly been possible, if not likely.

Generally a good book, but can be confusing in audio form.
Revisado: 06-13-24
The quality of the book is very good, but for the audio form of the book, they should do more to differentiate the made-up scenarios from the real events. Sometimes you can lose track of what is real and what is false, unless you already have a very detailed understanding of the actual events. All of a sudden you’ll hear something clearly false & will leave your head spinning about all the prior events you were taking at face value.

Historia
For decades, a few numbers came to define Chinese politics—until those numbers did not count what mattered and what they counted did not measure up. Seeking Truth and Hiding Facts argues that the Chinese government adopted a system of limited, quantified vision in order to survive the disasters unleashed by Mao Zedong's ideological leadership. Jeremy Wallace explains how that system worked and analyzes how the problems that accumulated in its blind spots led Xi Jinping to take drastic action.

Mediocre book
Revisado: 05-19-24
Book was dry and a bit boring. Info was ok, though the chapter at the end about covid was disappointing and a bit uninformed. Still giving credence to the ‘wet market’ farce, and too much glorification of China’s response to it. CCP hid bad statistics way more than he realized. Commentary on the US’ response also seemed misinformed.

Interesting and important book
Revisado: 11-07-23
This makes a lot of great points, & is important for revealing corruption in public schools. I would tell listeners to feel free to skim or skip the chapter on statistics (I think chapter 2 “Charter Schools & their results”). The book gets a lot better after that. The statistics are important and supportive of the author’s conclusions, but they can be a bit boring to listen to them being read w/o commentary for page after page after page. Thankfully the other chapters afterward move more smoothly.

Historia
As the World Trade Center buildings collapsed, the Pentagon burned, and a small group of passengers fought desperately to stop a third plane from completing its deadly flight plan, America went on war footing. Killing the Killers narrates America's intense global war against extremists who planned and executed not only the 9/11 attacks but hundreds of others in America and around the world, and who eventually destroyed entire nations in their relentless quest for power.

Too politicized.
Revisado: 08-14-23
This book tends to inject unnecessary things about various politicians. It adds nothing meaningful to the actual details of the events. The bias is apparent.

Misses the mark
Revisado: 05-20-20
Friedman has some interesting things to say, but puts way too much weight on economic factors and not enough on social and philosophical differences that underpin the changes America has undergone. And prepare to hear the word “technocracy” roughly 1 billion times.
The narration does not do the book any favors. It feels almost like a monotone, and is slow, clinical, boring, and struggles to maintain the listener’s attention. I think Friedman would have done a better job reading it. If you get this book, I recommend setting it at 1.25x or faster to make it sound normal.

Historia
From the first cannonballs fired by American warships at North African pirates to the conquest of Falluja by the Marines, and from the early American explorers who probed the sources of the Nile to the diplomats who strove for Arab-Israeli peace, the United States has been dramatically involved in the Middle East. For well over two centuries, American statesmen, merchants, and missionaries, both men and women, have had a profound impact on the shaping of this crucial region.

Decent history, but slow voice
Revisado: 09-23-19
This is a decent summary of US involvement in the Middle East that often goes unmentioned, having been overshadowed by modern events.
However, the audiobook narrator is dreadfully slow. I put it on 1.25x speed and it was about equal to what other books sound like at 1.0x speed. The audio could be much better with a more exciting & less sleepy narrator.

Historia
How did America become “one nation, indivisible”? What unified a growing number of disparate states into the modern country we recognize today? To answer these questions, Winchester follows in the footsteps of America’s most essential explorers, thinkers, and innovators. Introducing the fascinating people who played a pivotal role in creating today’s United States, he ponders whether the historic work of uniting the States has succeeded, and to what degree.

Regretful waste of money
Revisado: 02-27-19
The author does not seem to ever miss an opportunity to inject his politics and opinions amongst what should be a work of history. That’s how you find yourself listening to digressions on nuclear weapons among sections about Lewis and Clark, or the author’s opinions about certain contemporary radio hosts, or haphazard guesses about church impact on geology, or guesses about factory placement. The comments often feel somewhat out of place within the context of what he is discussing.
Then there is the almost worshipful repeated emphasis regarding big government programs, and suppositions about positive impacts from journalism that seem somewhat self-serving.
This is not really up to the standards of other works of history.

WAR. It will happen again. We must be ready. Sober words from Dr. Sebastian Gorka, a man who has made the unvarnished truth his specialty. And there’s one eternal truth that Americans are in danger of forgetting: the most important weapon in any geopolitical conflict is the will to win. And we must win. In this powerful manifesto, Dr. Gorka explains the basic principles that have guided strategists since Sun Tzu penned The Art of War in the sixth century BC. To defeat your enemy, you must know him. But that’s the last thing liberal elites are interested in.
