Love is a stranger: what a great read! I loved the books, and the audio just made the experience better!
Revisado: 08-11-21
The book and the adventures, the emotional roller-coaster is thrilling in its own, but the voices made it more real for me. I liked listen into Nikolas and Ben's relationship, liked to go through (together with them) again all the changes they had to experience in order to make their relationship work.
I liked Nikolas' way of talking, the strange words he used (abhore, obtuse etc). As a non-native English speaker it is always amusing to see how rearly used words are we thought, and looked strange upon, when we accidentally speak them 🤣
So yeah, this is one of my favorite Audible titles.

Audio: the characters come to life
Revisado: 06-12-20
Shadows on the Border is narrated by Callum Hale, same as Lost in Time was, and the quality of the narration is exactly as perfect as it was in the previous book.
All the characters are back from Lost in Time, and they are represented during the narration with full of care, attention and tenderness. But along with Lew and Alec, Will Grant also get his fair share of the spotlight with the new introduced character, Fenn from the Border who is used as a new source of information, Fenn is the one expanding the other characters’ (and of course the readers’) understanding about the world.
The emotional roller-coaster will certainly make your heart hurt for the characters regardless of reading the book or listening to the audio – but the audio will bring the experience to its fullest. Callum is a wizard as he makes you feel everything the characters feel during their ordeals and adventures, you can feel the laughter or see the tears, hear the little trembles of fear or sadness in their voices. In Callum’s narration you can hear all the emotions evoked by the fear of an uncertain future or the lingering traumas of the war, and of course the happiness when the circumstances let the characters to… be happy or easy with each other.
l’d recommend it to anyone who likes novels taking place in the after-war London, with a thrilling storytelling and unfolding mysteries.

Historia
Lew Rogers's life is pleasantly boring until his friend Mira messes with magic she doesn't understand. While searching for her, he's pulled back in time to 1919 by a catastrophic magical accident. As he tries to navigate a strange time and find his friend in the smoky music clubs of Soho, the last thing he needs is Detective Alec Carter suspecting him of murder. London in 1919 is cold, wet, and tired from four years of war. Alec is back in the Metropolitan Police after slogging out his army service on the Western Front.

The Book and the Audio: the characters come to life
Revisado: 05-29-20
There’s a lot of emotional parts ins the book, like Lew’s shock and terror in a London unknown to him. Or Alec’s emotions and painful memories, representing everyone who had fought in the Great War and survived the terrors of it. I liked every bit of the agony of the post-war London, and Lew’s confusion while trying to learn everything new around him and adapt to his new life as a police photographer.
Actually, there are a lot of characters in the book of various age and gender, like Lew and Alec the two main characters, Mr. Kelly the elderly gentleman, his family and household members, Mira Lew’s foster sister and her love interest – Tally - from the band she belongs to. Not to mention the whole variety of minor characters, like the fellow policemen – Grant - Alec works with, and Lew’s landlady and neighbors.
I wasn’t really sure how Callum Hale would narrate the book giving a distinct voice to every character. Yet, after listening to the result of Callum’s performance all my ecxpectations were surpassed.
What I really liked about the book:
The magic system was perfectly completed by a well-developed lingo. It was fun to see how Lew and the other magic users refused to call it magic, because for them it wasn’t magic or spells, they used this skill as an ordinary sense like seeing, hearing etc. Therefore they constantly refer performing magic as “pulling” or “working”, magic itself as “pull” and magic users as “workers.” This kind of specific lingo added an extra layer to the story making the characters more complex, further connecting them by this common language.
Whom I would recommend:
to anyone who likes novels taking place in the after-war London, with a packed and eventful storytelling, not to mention the detailed and likeable characters with stunning character development. The romance is slow-burning you won’t have any scorching scenes, and at the end we only got a promise of something more between Alec and a Lew, a promise of a fresh start.

It's 1946, and the dust of World War Two has just begun to settle. When famous archaeologist Rufus Denby returns to London, his life and reputation are as devastated as the city around him. He's used to the most glamorous of excavations, but can't turn down the offer of a job in rural Sussex. It's a refuge, and the only means left to him of scraping a living. With nothing but his satchel and a mongrel dog he's rescued from a bomb site, he sets out to investigate an ancient church in the sleepy village of Droyton.

My favorite audiobook so far!
Revisado: 11-10-18
I loved the book too, it is one of my favorites, but it wasn't complete without the audio version. Listening to this book, all the characters just came to life. Vivid and lively, I could feel all their emotions, and I could laugh or cry with them, I felt their rage, their despair. I love Archie, Rufus, Drusilla, and all the other, I wish I could meet them in person.
