Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Our new VP explains in his own words
Revisado: 11-10-24
I bought this to understand better why the county voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2024, while our “Elite” Northeastern pockets were overwhelmingly shocked and disgusted by him. This story, if it’s still true for him, uncovers the backstory of a man who lambasted “childless cat ladies,” and reveals a reflective, thoughtful, truly conservative, and gifted story teller. His acerbic and bombastic observations on how bad parenting is the fault of parents now makes sense. His reflections on how solid parenting, including good nutrition, prioritization of education and other observations of thoughtful, social-capital informed parenting now make sense. How he landed his brilliant, beautiful, Indian American, Yale-trained lawyer as a wife also makes sense. This is worth a listen if you’re, like me, shocked and confused. Let’s hope this man gets his policy agenda correct and has the democratically grounded power to carry out meaningful change for his “Hill” people.

Historia
From an early age, it is drilled into our heads: Restlessness, distraction, and ignorance are the enemies of success. We’re told that learning is all self-discipline, that we must confine ourselves to designated study areas, turn off the music, and maintain a strict ritual if we want to ace that test, memorize that presentation, or nail that piano recital. But what if almost everything we were told about learning is wrong?

Mostly how we "remember", not how we "learn"
Revisado: 05-05-16
This was a fascinating book. Nicely laid out with complex cognitive systems described clearly. My only issue was that the book is slightly mischaracterized to be about "learning" when most of it is on memory and recall. The author does touch on deeper levels of learning- application, synthesis and making connections. I would have liked more here. Still a really great listen.
