Historia
Shay Remby arrives in Hollywood with $58 and a handmade knife, searching for her brother, Odin. Odin’s a brilliant hacker but a bit of a loose cannon. He and a group of radical animal-rights activists hit a Singular Corp. research lab in Eugene, Oregon. The raid was a disaster, but Odin escaped with a set of highly encrypted flash drives and a post-surgical dog. When Shay gets a frantic 3 a.m. phone call from Odin - talking about evidence of unspeakable experiments, and a ruthless corporation, and how he must hide - she’s concerned.

No Ending, Contains Animal Cruelty
Revisado: 02-25-25
Story is ok but too many times there was an obvious answer as to what to do but the character did the dumb thing.
This is not a stand alone book. This books storyline creates all the problems. The end of the book resolves none of the problems just leads to the next book
I have read 30+ Sanford books and this is not up to his usual standards. But they never are when they “collaborate” with another writer who I believe actually does the writing and the big name author lends their name to it.
The graphic animal and human cruelty made me cringe. Wish I had not listened to this book. Will not get book 2

Historia
Thirty years ago, Wilde was found as a boy living feral in the woods, with no memory of his past. Now an adult, he still doesn't know where he comes from, and another child has gone missing. No one seems to take Naomi Pine's disappearance seriously, not even her father - with one exception. Hester Crimstein, a television criminal attorney, knows through her grandson that Naomi was relentlessly bullied at school. Hester asks Wilde - with whom she shares a tragic connection - to use his unique skills to help find Naomi.

Relevant to Current Environment
Revisado: 01-01-25
The story was good and kept my interest. Lots of clever twists that had some clues if you caught them but still many surprises. It did an excellent job of showing the current state of spinning lies and pushing misinformation by TV personality politicians and the different justice system for the wealthy and then everyone else. Unfortunately it truly represents life now.
There were some stretches of believability to make the story fit but there usually is in strong hero action type characters. The characters could have been more fully developed imo which is why I gave the story a 4. I will listen to more of his books though.
The narrator was fine except for one particular woman’s grating, annoying voice who was a main character so it was frequently heard.

Historia
By age twenty-four, Letty Davenport has seen more action and uncovered more secrets than many law enforcement professionals. Now a recent Stanford grad with a master’s in economics, she’s restless and bored in a desk job for U.S. Senator Colles. Letty’s ready to quit, but her skills have impressed Colles, and he offers her a carrot: feet-on-the-ground investigative work, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.

Another great Sandford Book
Revisado: 09-18-24
I read or listened to every book in the Lucas Davenport series. I love Sanford’s gritty stories with enough suspense, action and character development to keep me reading/listening longer than I meant to, unable to put it down.
I do not care for Virgil Flowers or that series, but The Investigator returns to the magic of the Davenport “Prey” series. I’m glad Sandford is acknowledging the passing of time and appropriate aging of his characters. Lucas was getting older and it wouldn’t have been realistic for him to be able to continue with the very physical demands of his stories. Time to pass the baton to the next generation, Lettie. And she doesn’t disappoint.
The story has relevance to current events and headlines. Things than can and have happened, the violence driven by hate as a warning of possible future calamities. Truly captures the current environment.
I saw a couple reviews complaining the story is woke 🙄. Ringing endorsement for me. Convinced me to give it try and I’m glad I did
The narrator’s gravelly voice and punchy delivery fit the story perfectly.

Mediocre
Revisado: 04-08-24
The setting was different and not real but similar to medieval times. The language did not fit the times. Felt like no research was done even though this is fantasy. Everything was too easy for the protagonist. Even there was a skill or power he needed to accomplish something he magically had it. Story was mediocre, not especially creative. Felt like a bunch making up a story as they go along with no reason behind sudden skills or abilities or “what happened next”. I won’t continue in this series even though they the story half finished at the end.
The narrator was very good

Fun
Revisado: 03-26-24
This is a fun easy to listen to supernatural fantasy. I love witches, vampires, fairies and the like and this series has them all. It has humor and action and thrills. Not a classic but good enough for a light listening and I just ordered the next in the series.
In its lane, the story is a 5 and the narrator Marsden is superb.

Fun, Funny, Engaging
Revisado: 02-13-24
I watched an old TV series on Tubi called The Dresden Files based on this book series. I really liked it, it was only 1 season but mashed together loosely the first 3 books so I thought I would try the next book. I’m hooked and halfway through I ordered the next in the series. Look, this isn’t a classic novel but I didn’t expect it to be. I wanted fun, entertainment with some tension but with humor, action and a good story. This is it.
It is fantasy with humans, wizards, faeries, ogres, sprites, gremlins, high councils and more. He brings them alive in the story and each one has a unique personality. The author creates this fantasy world that works and is not over the top unbelievable.
The narrator is top notch and perfect for these books. The story is told in first person so there is mostly one voice, Harry’s, but he does voice some of the other characters. The emotions and tones he uses are perfect, he conveys excitement, dread, pain, confusion all at the right pitch. It feels like I am in a conversation with Harry and he is telling me his adventures. Storytelling is an art.

Bad version of Where the Crawdads Sing
Revisado: 01-25-24
Poor girl lives in a swamp with her abusive alcoholic father who pulls her out of school at a young age and her mother left/died when she was young. She has a secret boyfriend. Sound familiar? Just over an hour in and it’s Deja vu from having listened to the better book with the same story Where the Crawdads sing.
Can’t stand the narrator with the bad fake southern accent that ends each sentence like it’s a question.
After 45 minutes I started skipping ahead because the story and narrator were so painful to listen to. After about an hour and a half I can’t make myself listen anymore.
I want my money back
Skip this book. If you like that type story get Where the Crawdads Sing which was written a few years before this. It is a better book and story and narrator.

Historia
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Classic
Revisado: 08-30-23
I was familiar with A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist from movies but had never read Dickens. This is the third novel of his I have read and have come to appreciate what a brilliant author he was.
Like his other novels, Great Expectations explores the cruelty, naivety and pretensions of the time period and of human nature. His characters are so well drawn that the reader sees their flaws and hopes and lives through their experiences.
As always, the book ends with the characters unbiased reckoning and realization of the state of affairs and consequences of decisions made.

Historia
The moon peers out from behind the dark clouds, but deep within the swamp, even the tiniest sliver is like a beacon in the pitch black. The path is barely discernable, but she knows the way. She steps up to the edge of the water and stares at the silver locket in her hand, a picture of two girls inside. One is her. The other…is waiting. She begins to sing, and the winds pick up her tune. The water stirs, and from the center of the angry current, the young woman emerges. Her haunting voice carries over the water.

Great Story
Revisado: 05-03-23
The plot was well developed though a few short cuts on facts were taken to fit the story. Kept my interest till the end and I did not see the ending coming.
The narrator was terrible. All the women’s voices sounded shaky and trembling all the time. Not the men, just the women. Very annoying.
I will listen to more books in the series but hope they changed the narrator.
