I haven’t come across an Agatha Raisin that I didn’t like but some are more memorable than others. This one is really one of her best!

Historia
Highland Games fanatic Fiona Campbell believes her only value is her family's history, myths, and legends. So when she travels back to 1689 Scotland and discovers she's the Fiona of family legend, you'd think she'd be excited. And she is. Except that the legendary warrior she's to save her ancestor from is the hottie in a kilt she just handfasted. Duncan MacCowan once trusted his heart to the wrong woman, but when a strange lass drops into his life and pries opens his heart again, he impulsively handfasts her.

Really good male voices!
Revisado: 02-03-22
The reader does and excellent job with the male voices! Doing opposite gender voices is very challenging and she does a superb job. Her American one is not to my taste and put me off heroine a bit at first. It also gave me a giggle to hear her say “big ass bed” in her prim British accent.
The plot is interesting but I should have read the two in order. I could follow it without reading the first book but the build up wasn’t as satisfying and I have a feeling you get to know the characters better. I found both protagonists to be a little flat but maybe I wouldn’t feel that way if I read book one. If you’re wavering between the two, I suggest just going in order.
I also thought it was too short. The story ended just when I was finally identifying with the characters! The book was good - just give me more of it please :)

Great story, bad female voices
Revisado: 09-02-21
The story is fun and interesting. You meet a variety of characters that have their own books, which is typical of this type of series and something I really like. It was pretty steamy in some parts but it has more to offer than just sex scenes.
All that said - the narrator’s voices are awful. His regular reading voice is very pleasant but when he voices the characters he chooses the most annoying, whining, high pitch screeches. Like - why? His speaking voice is so nice that it is clearly a deliberate choice and I just don’t understand it. Enjoyed the plot though!

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

An excellent conclusion to the duology
Revisado: 05-26-21
Intense, fast paced, intriguing plot lines - everything you expect based on the first book. I loved this conclusion and really hope there is a third book (although there isn’t one planned). Very satisfying ending that is true to the characters built.
My only qualm is with Jesper’s reader. Is he southern? Is he British? What’s going on there? He was significantly more consistent in the first book but now the reader is all over the place. It didn’t ruin the listen for me but there were some cringe worthy moments (why is Nina suddenly English at the end?).

Gripping, fast paced story with competing characters
Revisado: 05-21-21
The multiple narrators is not my favorite choice... but after the first few shifts I didn’t mind. Don’t let negative reviews of multiple narrators turn you off this book! It is a well crafted, fun ride that introduces complex and compelling characters. I was so into the story after the first few chapters that the changing narrators didn’t bother me at all. I can’t wait to start the sequel. I would definitely recommend this listen!

Such a beautiful story! The world building is so complete and enveloping that it feels like you have lived a lifetime in Circe’s world by the end of it.
As good as the story and writing are, what really makes or breaks an audiobook is the narrator- Perdita Weeks is the perfect choice and now one of my all time favorites. She is able to capture so much emotion and feeling. Overall, this has been one of my favorite listens!

Wildly inaccurate but kind of fun?
Revisado: 06-04-19
This is a nice listen... the main characters are fairly charming and the plot is interesting and moves fast. There are a lot of positive things about this book...But you really need to be able to suspend your disbelief on many fronts! The heroine goes back in time and plants zucchini in ambiguously ancient Scotland? Wildly inaccurate and not remotely explained by the magic that does exist. There is a certain delight in being annoyed by how dumb characters are - if you enjoy yelling at an audiobook, this is the one for you.

Not great..
Revisado: 08-30-18
This book should be titled "Two American People Fall In Love." Besides the barely described setting, this book has very little to do with Scotland. The reader does an excellent drunk voice but can't do a Scottish accent AT ALL.
The book felt more like a random compliation of romance tropes than a real story. Characters lack background, depth and personality. And they love each other... just because they do? And are both really hot? And they fell in love offscreen so we should just believe it because they have history?
The 'twist' revealed at the end is obvious a few chapters in. It was agonizing to hear the author try to build suspense by prolonging what she clearly thought was going to be a huge shocker for the audience.
I'm honestly very forgiving when it comes to romance novels but this one was just such a dud.
