This was the Wheel of Time/Lord of the Rings series for my generation :) If you like the Hero's Journey myth, or any sort of epic fantasy this book will be for you. I agree with the others- horrible reader- he's got a pleasing enough voice but doesn't know how to use it. Hopefully, he's just new and will get better through the series, because I'm buying them all anyway.

Whoever picked the designation of SFF for this book had a wicked sense of humor. That doesn't make the book bad though, just odd. This is a soft porn/romance novel if ever there was one. Rich, European vampire prince touches minds with a sexy, telepathic, American chic and forcibly carries her away for nights of pleasurable abandon at his lair; because they are soul mates, no less. ;>

If you like reading fantasy like Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of the Seven Suns, or the Dune epic, or Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time Series, or Orson Scott Card's Ender Series, or Stephen King's The Dark Tower Serial you will most likely enjoy this author. Her characters are charming and personal, occasionally annoying, but mostly just very life like. Her motives for people are realistic. In this book especially (not to ruin it) her end game was very true to life. Most people are not bad, it amazes me that in fantasy books they make the dark side so twisted and evil, it usually just comes down to a lack of choices. She makes her villains likable and real, and that is good writing.
Oh, and yeah, the main characters are gay...what series were you reading that this, the third book, surprised you with that?

I really didn't think the narrator was bad-

much better sounding/ less pretentious than the guy they got to read the next couple. Not being Christian, I found the series annoyingly skewed. It might have been the author?s intent, but occasionally it kinda beats you over the head with the Jesus theme. All the books in this series do. I?m sure there had to be a more subtle way to get the job done. It's a very well written fantasy series though; it's worth all of the 5 stars- even with its cultural biases.

I will not be reading any more Orson Scott Card books. I?ve really enjoyed him in the past, but his making a mockery of a rape charge is more than I can take. His lead female roles have always been either as a mother (caretaker), breeder, or failure. It didn?t bother me before, because I love my role as a caretaker and wife in my own life. That doesn?t mean I think it?s the only valuable role a woman can choose, and shouldn?t be represented as such in respectful popular literature. I?ve stopped this book now and won?t buy any more (not that there are many more left that I haven?t read). It?s sad though, that someone who writes so well, has such a limited view of half of our species.

"Any reviewer who would refer to this novel as good is lying, and kidding the reader." Well that's just stupid, sorry, my opinion, but there it is. I love this audio, and am pretty confident that I?m not the only person on the planet who feels this way. It?s true his writing has more in common with poetry, instead of this week's blockbuster hit. That doesn't play well with some people, but others like it just fine. If you read The English Patient and liked that one, you will like this one too.

Ok, technically it's a ghost story, but.....

there is nothing spooky about it. I never once got scared, and I'm fairly susceptible that way. It's a story about the everyday, the Mormon faith, and being a parent. I thought it was a great story, depressing, but great. If you read it, go into it with an open mind. I?m gay, an atheist and married to a shrink, but still found myself identifying with the characters and caught up in the flow of their lives. They are very easy to love. He really gets the details right.
(well, except one detail, and i'll try to be as indirect as possible here- the pregnant woman's not noticing sensory aspects of the ending...uh, she'd notice- especially being the personality type she was) but that's just being picky and only stands out because he nailed everything else

McPhee is an amazing writer. I love geology, but he makes it positively lush and compelling to listen to. I am so glad Audible added this to their collection. Thanks!!
