Historia
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

A story of strength and courage
Revisado: 10-19-23
I loved Anna’s story and am so inspired by her bravery despite everything life threw at her. What an incredible person.
SPOILER ALERT: With huge respect to her, I felt the Christianity section of the story towards the end a little much. But that is part of her journey so I can appreciate that. I personally just don’t resonate with reiterated Christian content.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Oh the denial!
Revisado: 07-20-23
Jeanette will be reaching into the forgotten and erased memories of millions of women who have similar stories. So many of us of her generation came from mothers who grew up with very different ideas of mental and physical health, and this story has opened up boxes in my mind I didn’t even notice were there. This story is necessary and is beautifully crafted.

Historia
So, I’ve written a book. This certainly doesn’t mean that I’m quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it’s like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall....

A lifelong fan of Dave’s I am so sad this book had to end! I laughed, I cried, it was everything and more I hoped it would be.

Historia
Dame Sue Black is an internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist. She has lived her life eye to eye with the Grim Reaper, and she writes vividly about it in this book, which is part primer on the basics of identifying human remains, part frank memoir of a woman whose first paying job as a schoolgirl was to apprentice in a butcher shop, and part no-nonsense but deeply humane introduction to the reality of death in our lives. It is a treat for CSI junkies, murder mystery and thriller fans, and anyone seeking a clear-eyed guide to a subject that touches us all.

I wanted a science book about forensics. I got a mostly-memoir instead.

Brilliant
Revisado: 01-12-21
I loved this book... I laughed out loud, I sobbed, the last few pages were beautifully written. I found the fast-talking American narrator a little off putting though. I would have preferred a Scottish narrator, for authenticity.

Historia
For many of us, what lies beyond conventional portrayals of mental illness is often shrouded in mystery, misconception and fear. Dr Sean Baumann spent decades as a Psychiatrist at Valkenberg Hospital and, through his personal engagement with patients’ various forms of psychosis, he describes the lived experiences of those who suffer from schizophrenia, depression, bipolar and other disorders. The stories told are authentic, mysterious and compelling, representing both vivid expressions of minds in turmoil and the struggle to give form and meaning to distress.
