Historia
Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts.

Sometimes it pays to hire a professional voice actor to read your book. Maguire has no talent for dialects and Glinda is particularly annoying.

Historia
Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

Charming Walt Marlow convinces Danielle the only way he can move on is if she solves the mystery of his death.

Poor narrator okay story
Revisado: 11-05-23
Story is just okay. The writer would do well to trim the fluff and stop describing unnecessary details. Narrator misses. She has whiny female voices, and sometimes she doesn’t put the emphasis on the correct words. That is very annoying.

This story starts out as if it will be filled with action, then devolves into a Harlequin Romance: “my body betrays me”, “every fiber of my being…” awful.

Poor Narration hire a professional
Revisado: 10-05-22
The narrator made a great number of mistakes in pronunciation, as well as technical mistakes: repeating sentences she had already read ( she had obviously taken a break in recording but did not check where she left off). There is very little vocal difference between characters. The story itself is a bit maudlin. Glad I did not pay for this one.

Learn to pronounce words and place names
Revisado: 06-30-22
The narrator is fine in terms of tempo and finding some differing accents for the characters. However it is exceedingly jarring when she mispronounces certain place names: Magdalen College in Oxford should sound like “Maudlin” for example. Not overwhelming but annoying nonetheless.

Too many similes
Revisado: 06-01-22
The story is fine. The influence of other authors is obvious, but the trope works. The writing is a bit simple and the use of similes is overwhelming. Reads like a high school assignment.

Historia
The year is 1910, and in the small and seemingly sleepy English municipality of Haxford, there’s a new chief police inspector. At first, the dapper and unflappable Pignon Scorbion strikes something of an odd figure among the locals, who don’t see a need for such an exacting investigator. But it isn’t long before Haxford finds itself very much in need of a detective. Luckily, Scorbion and the local barber are old acquaintances, and the barbershop employs a cast of memorable characters who are nothing less than enthralled by the enigmatic new chief police inspector.

Horrible, garbled narration
Revisado: 05-21-22
I cannot rate the story because I cannot get past the first chapter. The narrator has a weird way of pausing after every few words which is annoying enough, but his character voices are often unintelligible. Horrid.

Historia
After an adventurous season spent excavating at Dahshoor, and narrowly averting the clutches of the Master Criminal, Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody Emerson and her spouse prepare for a quiet summer in England. The social and domestic routine, though interrupted by the precocious escapades of their only child, Ramses, hardly seems much of a challenge for the indomitable Emersons.

Annoying narrator
Revisado: 04-09-22
Why this narrator makes gulping noses between sentences, I will never know, but it is very annoying. She also shifted the feel of the character from a free spirited, adventurous lady to a Victorian snob. I miss Susan O’Malley’s narration of the previous few books.

Feels too scattered
Revisado: 10-17-21
I enjoy the premise, but this feels like a series of short stories strung together. It is unsettling to switch from the first story about Jack the Ripper to the next unrelated story. I kept waiting for the Jack the Ripper story to have an impact on e rest of the book, but, nope. Feels like something cobbled together from college creative writing assignments. I hope the next book is better, but then I had also hoped this was going to be better than the first book- alas, no.
