When the end of the world arrived, it came not with a bang, as most expected, but with more of a "pfft" instead. Humanity has been torn asunder and brought to the edge of total annihilation in less than an hour. For those who died, it was a quick death, so fast that their brains didn't have time to process the pain signals from their nerves. For those who survived, the true horror is about to begin as they struggle to not only stay alive, but come to grips with the shocking realization about what - and who - was responsible.

As hordes of infected continue their murderous rampage through the small town of Lost Hills, Vista County Sheriff Deputies Connor and Matt continue the battle to rescue their families from the deranged hands of Curtis White. Time is short as they fear he will settle his grudge by adding their families to the mounting number of bodies left in the wake of his destruction. Meanwhile, Connor’s brother, Zeke, faces his own obstacles as he attempts to escape Atlanta before the virus unleashed in the Chinese bio-attack infects the entire population, turning people into infected monsters.

After the carnage of the night and dealing with an infected Lani, the team leave the fort and once more venture into rural towns to find food and buy time. As the day wears on, the tension between Howie and Marcy grows, with increasingly petty arguments that sap the morale of the others. They find a deserted village where the infection strikes in vast numbers. With too many to fight head-on, the lads flee and take refuge in an old mansion.

Since childhood Nila Carter has been made to spend every weekend at the family cabin. In her teenage years she believes it to be a prison; as an adult it becomes her sanctuary and means to survive. When a mysterious outbreak occurs in India, Nila's brother, Bobby, a virologist with the CDC, places the family on a precautionary alert to be ready to bug out. Unlike anything he's ever seen, the rabies-like virus is not just deadly; it causes extreme violent behavior in those infected.

The world we live in now is one where you have to fight or die. There are no exceptions. Sometimes, fighting against the people who want to take what you have is harder than dealing with the walkers. The world may never be the same again. I'm thinking it won't. How could it be? We have lost 75 percent or more of the human population. We have always said the government was incompetent, well, they finally proved it with the zombie outbreak.
