Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

Still good, but seemed to be missing something.

Didn’t feel connected. Lots of jumps back and forth. Overall still probably worth a listen. But it was a tad disjointed.

Historia
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Worth a listen, great author.

Other books of his are better in my opinion. But this was still well done and had interesting points. My one issue is that it seemed less geared towards an individual reader, and more focused on hiring groups and businesses.

Historia
Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

It’s a good book! Won’t go as far as to say, the best I have listened to, but still easily worth the listen.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 07-25-23
Someone recommended that I listen to this book. Initially it started out slow, but after the first chapter there are a number of things drawing you in.
Reminiscing and hearing about old Pixar movies you grew up with.
Hearing very creative and interesting managing tips.
Learning about the growth of Steve Jobs, Ed Catmull, others, and Pixar.
It is definitely worth a listen.

Historia
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 07-11-22
Personal opinion here, so take it or leave it:
Goggins went through hell with his father and upbringing. And hearing his story of losing weight and getting into BUDs, awesome. Amazing. Great job.
I don’t think that he should have been a seal, but that’s my opinion. He seems like he is just insecure and trying to prove something. So I give him TONS of credit for pushing through and bettering his life. The life lessons seem shaky and off putting sometimes. He even speaks about hiding Motrin in the sand and stealing the schedule. I wonder if he would have made it through if he wasn’t high on pain killers….
But maybe that’s normal to pass hell week. Unsure.
I am glad he turned his life around, but I get the feeling that this guy would be someone that people clash with a lot throughout his life. Always trying to prove how badass he is.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

A good overall book
Revisado: 03-29-21
I listened to broaden my perspective and that’s what happened. A lot of very good and interesting insights that will make you reconsider what you think you know. I had a lot of “cringe” moments while listening, but I think that’s the point and after thinking about it, I would like to change certain views I have or the ways I act.
On the other side, I do think the writer takes certain beliefs a tad too far and some stuff will be counterproductive towards a better race-united future. I won’t go into detail on what I disagree with.
Overall it was a good learning experience and worth a listen.

Historia
Beginning in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes. In New York City, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, officials watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to bring it down.

I was only in middle school when 9/11 occurred. I was unaware, and couldn’t comprehend, the atrocity, chaos and level of damage that this event caused America.
I am so glad to have listened to this book and taken away a new depth of understanding regarding all parts of the attack.
Definitely recommended to everyone. It is a difficult book to get through though. You will fight between a thirst to continue soaking up stories and knowledge, and not wanting to continue because of the horror and intensity people saw and struggled through.
