Continual greatness with each book.

It took me a while to listen to this installment, but Shirtaloon/Travis continue to surprise me. I wasn't sure where the story would go from the end of the last book, but this book wraps it up poignantly and hints at some fun and interesting developments. One of my favorite of the series.

Master-craft storytelling

In the second book, the story really feels like “this is what I think would happen in this situation.” To me that’s the mark of a great story. The plot is unforced and feels natural, the vignettes are meaningful, and the characters emotions and actions are varied.

The narrator changed and I enjoyed the acting. Had a deep bag of accents which didn’t seem forced. The main character voice was not annoying. The cadence was great, didn’t need to adjust speed faster.

Fun characters

Fun premise of a boy who has talent and is taken in and trained up. MC seems to have no crazy grudge or divine purpose which is refreshing in this genre. Seems like the start of an exciting adventure.

Somehow still getting better

This is one of those amazing stories where even eleven books in, it’s still improving. The side character arcs are interesting and well timed and Zach is still interesting and exciting. The story still has intrigue and mystery but there is also payoff in every arc. This is a great long term story.

I listened to this after reading Ivan’s other series hoping it would be as good and this book didn’t disappoint. What I love about Ivan’s books is that the supporting cast is powerful and useful and not just there for decoration.

Great beginning.

You’re treated to intriguing beginning to an overall story as well as an interesting first arc. The characters seem complex and we begin to dig a bit into motivations and the like, even with the antagonists. Exciting fight scenes and interesting magic system. The world building is probably the most impressive part. A really interesting take on for a fantasy setting.

Lots of fun characters

Best thing about these books are all of the unique and fun characters and interactions. Too many times progression fantasy has one character with any depth but these books do a good job of fleshing out the supporting cast.

Really unrealistic and immature main character.

Main character is a man whose wife died a long time ago and he loves her so much he never remarried. When he died he’s reincarnated as a snake so he can find his wife. Literally second group of people he meets he makes a “wet pussy” joke to the wife of a man who went overboard a boat. Setting aside that the woman doesn’t seem offended or disgusted at all, how can I believe that this is the action of an 80 year old devoted husband who just got his chance to meet his wife meet weeks ago. It was too dumb, dropped right after.
