Intriguing and thoughtful...
Revisado: 08-01-23
A well-written and suspenseful tale with a wealth of details and overall emotional sensitivity. Reminiscent at times of certain vintage "Twilight Zone" episodes.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

A cross-genre wonder...
Revisado: 03-04-23
I'm normally not a big fan of fantasies, but this book is an exception! A work of Stephen King's maturity, "Fairy Tale" crosses the genres of fantasy, horror, and even science fiction to provide a successful and powerful unification that is intelligent, awesome, compelling, and wildly entertaining. There is simply so much here to appreciate on numerous levels. I'm so glad to have experienced this book!

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Memorable and richly nuanced
Revisado: 04-19-22
Approaching Homer's epic tale is a daunting task, but Madeline Miller manages to make it fresh and relatable, it's characters vivid, alive, and compelling. It works on so many levels! While one can struggle to finish many books and never turn to them again, this treatment is one that I know I will want to visit again in the future. The narration is equally powerful, and successful on all levels despite the challenges of the work. I regret only not having turned to this powerful and masterful audio book sooner!

A multi-dimensional powerhouse...
Revisado: 10-30-21
Not what I expected but so much more, "The Werewolf's 15 Minutes" blends horror, humor, and social commentary seamlessly. It exists in the rarified realm of where science and society meet the paranormal, much like the werewolf confounding our perceptions and defying easy description. There's more biting (forgive me) reflections here on the nature of lycantrophy and the human condition than in more pretentious works several times the length. "Werewolf" is entertaining yet thought-provoking and engagingly performed; not just a puff piece. Prepare to be amazed...two paws up!

Historia
100,000 years ago the object hit the lake at the deepest point, quickly sinking into its mile-deep Stygian darkness. The sheets of ice closed, time moved on and the land forgot. But over the centuries, legends grew of people vanishing, of strange, deformed animals and of an unexplained luminescence down in the lake depths. When Marcus Stenson won the lucrative contract to create a sturgeon fish farm on the site of disused paper mill on the shore of Lake Baikal, he thought he had won the lottery and refused to listen to the chilling folktales....

Great for fans of sci fi - horror!
Revisado: 10-17-21
I enjoyed this as much or more than any audiobook I've experienced. Intelligently and well-written, and equally well-performed. The comparisons to "The Thing" are apt, with a bit more "Rambo" thrown in. Good and three dimensional characters that are memorable. The story picks up momentum as it goes on, and It's easy to get swept away in this one. I'd love to see a big screen adaptation of the story, and there's room for a sequel at the end. Certainly glad that I picked this up!

Historia
Ripley’s shuttle has docked with the Marion. She arrives traumatised, only to find her rescuers under attack by a familiar foe. To make matters worse, it seems that Ash, an android she’d thought killed aboard the Nostromo, has uploaded his AI routines into her shuttle’s computer. Outside, the ship’s orbit is decaying faster than expected. The crew has just days to escape before they burn up in LV-178’s atmosphere.

Very true to the original source materials
Revisado: 11-25-20
It's good to see Ripley back in action again, likewise Jonesy the cat...but the evil AI programming of the android Ash still exists through a download, and is actively implementing Special Order 937! This is a great and believable extension of the original source materials, both respectful and true to the originals.

Starts out slowly, but gathers speed and intensity
Revisado: 11-24-20
I found that the audiobook dragged a bit at first, with the xenomorphs not even showing up until well into the story. It belabored the backgrounds, histories, politics, and attitudes of some of the characters a bit too much, but did round out some of the backstory missing previously. Once the aliens are discovered, however, the tale really takes off, and is a dynamic and exciting rendition. The production values are good, and the acting performances captivating as the sound and fury of the confrontations sweep over you...
