Returned b/c narrator’s delivery
Revisado: 01-03-25
This may or may not be a great book. I tried to keep listening but couldn’t get past the narrators voice. The delivery, the lack of emotion… it was putting me to sleep and making me walk away from the book as it was playing. Too bad for the author.

Revisado: 09-23-24
I’m not going to give anything away but after listening to one of the author’s other series I didn’t think the first one of this one was quite as good although it IS very good. But this second book has nailed it. I’m hooked! Absolutely excellent narration as well.

Powerhouse of a book!
Revisado: 07-18-24
This book has it all: a fantastic, riveting and important story, interesting and believable characters, a vivid setting, and stellar narration. Because it deals with race in the late 60’s, it’s one of those books I believe everyone should read, lest we forget what it was really like back then, and how clearly we can see the remnants and re-awaking of an awful history wanting to rear its ugly head again right now.

Geneva Rose’s other book that I read as great. This one…. I don’t know what happened but it’s pretty predictable and just…. The order of things didn’t work. Like someone had tried to write their first novel but didn’t know how. Long and drawn out with a reveal that just unsurprising and silly.

Different than her others and excellent!
Revisado: 02-26-24
This book has it all: excellent narration (truly... the job she did sounding like a 16-year old girl with all the right intonations, wow!), interesting plot and characters leaving you wondering what it is that's going to happen, and a great twist! I love all of her books so far (except "One by One"), and McFadden is a great go-to when you're not sure what to get. The narration was so good I want to look up what else she's narrated.

Historia
A night spent sleeping on dirt and leaves is not how Claire Matchett expected to spend her vacation. She thought this would be a break. A week of hiking and hot tubs with two other couple friends. Then Claire’s minivan breaks down on a lonely dirt road. With no cell reception, the group has no choice but to hike the rest of the way to their hotel. But it turns out the woods aren’t as easy to navigate as they thought. Hours later, they are lost. Hopelessly lost. And as they navigate deeper into the woods, the members of their party are struck down mysteriously one by one.

Not her best
Revisado: 02-26-24
I guess not every book from a prolific author can be stellar. I just listened to two Freida McFadden books. This one almost felt like it was written by someone else, especially compared to "The Teacher", which was the other one I just listened to. The Teacher was excellent! Supremely entertaining, stellar narration... I think the narration likely made this book as good as it was. The words and expressions exactly how the two main characters should be imagined. You really felt that the thoughts and words coming out of the 16-year old girl character's voice was exactly how it would be in real life. That's what made this "One by One" stand out so much compared to The Teacher, but not in a good way. The narrator here paused before the certain pronouns, and often before "I"... And the conversation and even the storyline was so unbelievable. I finished the book but had really just wanted to quit. I've loved all of her other books but this one was banal and infuriating because the conversations between the characters were unbelievable and silly. This won't stop me from reading or listening to her other books. Oh, and the narrator could certainly become great one day; she just needs to do away with the odd pauses and sound less cheerful when describing something that is decidely not cheerful.

A good story, and I'll listen to the next one
Revisado: 02-07-24
The story is good, a serial-killer story, but the main character, FBI agent Emily Slate, is somewhat...bland. There are some complexities that are alluded to and the book is good enough to make me want to read or listen to the second one in the series. The narrator: She does a GREAT job of doing all the character voices, EXCEPT of the main character. She's young, looks young, and I suppose she should sound young, but it's borderline valley girl in some instances. I think this narrator has great potential. She did the male characters great, and several with a southern drawl. In the beginning of the book some of her sentences are hard to hear at the end, the very couple of last words just too low to hear. It's worth a listen, the story is good and who doesn't love a good serial-killer mystery?
