Historia
They are icons of the literary world whose soaring works have been discussed and analyzed in countless classrooms, homes, and pubs. Yet for most listeners, the living, breathing human beings behind the classics have remained unknown - until now. In this utterly captivating audiobook, Dr. Elliot Engel, a leading authority on the lives of great authors, illuminates the fascinating and flawed members of literature's elite. In lieu of stuffy biographical sketches, Engel provides fascinating anecdotes.

Great introduction to some of the best.

I am in love with Wilde,
heavily pity Poe,
and frankly, couldn't really care for frost.
If you've always wondered why those three names are familiar, this is a great book to become a little more acquainted with these three gentlemen .

Historia
The Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, here elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way.

A humble giant of wisdom and powerful compassion
Revisado: 12-20-15
This is a very important book. It's a beautiful way to understand how we can treat others ethically, think about the logic of ask encompassing ethics, looking at the wonderful connections between people and their beliefs, whether religious, agnostic, atheist, And it's easy to like that Martin Sheen is reading it all to us.

charming voice narrating cliches

the idea that there shouldn't be a reason to not be happy is not a bad idea at all. It is also far from being an original one.
If you are looking for shallow messages of hope equivalent to a "Hang in There" cat poster narrated by a good ole' southern boy with a mansion, then look no further.

Historia
According to polls conducted by Gallup and the Pew Research Forum on Religion & Public Life, the majority of Americans fail basic tests about religion, including tests on their own faith. This is troublesome because religious literacy is about so much more than naming deities or knowing the stories of ancient history. For many of us, religion is a way to examine and understand ourselves. These 24 enlightening lectures offer you the chance to experience the world's religions from all angles – historical, theological, and cultural.

Fantastic but missing a few things
- De Sol-Pal en 08-18-15
My absolute FAVORITE of the Great Courses.
Revisado: 07-25-15
Would you listen to Cultural Literacy for Religion: Everything the Well-Educated Person Should Know again? Why?
"would you listen to it again? Why?" Already have. I completely adore the way Professor Mark Berkson has arranged and presented the information. The attention he gives each religion and/or philosophy is done with so much respect. His energy and very accessible lectures show his passion for the subject.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The best way to put it is that he explains each religion almost as if he's part of it explaining it to a lay person. I feel like he looks at the motives of whichever religion and its followers. It's really helped me with how I view others, their beliefs, and has shown the beauty that beliefs can give the human race.
Which scene was your favorite?
His explanation of Daoist philosophy. Most people say it's pessimistic, which has always disappointed me. He hits it right on the head.
If you could give Cultural Literacy for Religion: Everything the Well-Educated Person Should Know a new subtitle, what would it be?
One step closer to an all-inclusive world.
Any additional comments?
If you clicked on this book page, you should get this. It's a wonderful way to understand a bit more about our world, the people on it, and what makes them tick.

Historia
Candide and his tutor Pangloss travel the globe trying to follow the philosophy "All is for the best in this, the best of all possible worlds". However, they are stung and let down at every turn, being robbed, tortured, and ridiculed, amongst other trials. On hearing about their often disasterous travels, a listener feels unfortunately less than empathetic, and can't help themselves laughing out loud at this very funny account of the trail our optimistic travellers take.

SO glad I picked this up.
Revisado: 04-11-15
I have learned a bit about the French Revolution and I had learned that very much of it was inspired by Voltaire and it made me we want to understand a bit about him. I got this with a pretty good deal and I absolutely adore it. The reading, or should I say acting, is completely superb. The characters all have such wonderful voices that really bring out the characteristics of that person. the attitude, the humor, and the tragedy are so wonderfully displayed in this I really recommend it to anyone who is in the mood for fun, almost satirical poke at the world, and the ways of the human race. I just finished it, and the next book I'm going to listen to? This one. Again.
