Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Fun mystery, great narration
Revisado: 01-23-25
Nice cozy mystery set in post-WWI England with two very likable heroines and a fantastic narrator.

Historia
In a tale inspired by real events, pregnant journalist Joan Harken is cautiously excited to follow her fiancé back to his Minnesota hometown. After spending a childhood on the move and chasing the screams and swirls of news-rich city life, she’s eager to settle down. Lilydale’s motto, “Come Home Forever,” couldn’t be more inviting. And yet, something is off in the picture-perfect village. The friendliness borders on intrusive. Joan can’t shake the feeling that every move she makes is being tracked. An archaic organization still seems to hold the town in thrall.

Save your credit
Revisado: 12-21-24
Interesting concept, but poor writing and a painfully stupid main character make this a miss.

Historia
The award-winning and critically-acclaimed master of horror returns with a pair of chilling tales - both never-before-published in print or audio - that examine the violence and depravity of the human condition. Bringing together his acclaimed novella The Sea Dreams It Is the Sky and an all-new short novel My Heart Struck Sorrow, John Hornor Jacobs turns his fertile imagination to the evil that breeds within the human soul.

Not exactly cosmic horror, but atmospheric and engaging
Revisado: 06-10-23
Two very different but interesting tales. I wouldn’t call them Lovecraftian, though. They are creepy and atmospheric (especially the second) and wholly original. Just don’t go into it expecting Cthulhu and the ilk.

It’s been more than 20 years since Olof Hagström left home. Returning to his family’s house, he knows instantly that something is amiss. The front door key, hidden under a familiar stone, is still there. Inside, there’s a panicked dog, a terrible stench, water pooling on the floor: The father Olaf has not seen or spoken to in decades is dead in the bathroom shower.

Okay but forgettable
Revisado: 05-28-23
Not terrible, not particularly good. It helped kill a few hours while I was doing chores but I feel like I’ve already forgotten the story 15 minutes after finishing it.

Blah story, uninteresting detective
Revisado: 04-10-23
Plot is generic, writing ho-hum, and the two main characters are boring and not terribly sympathetic or smart. Skip.
