Historia
Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one. The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave.

It’s always refreshing to hear a scholar give historical information and a review of a deceased author as well as that author’s work.

Historia
On Memorial Day in Jewel, Minnesota, the body of wealthy landowner Jimmy Quinn is found floating in the Alabaster River, dead from a shotgun blast. The investigation falls to Sheriff Brody Dern, a highly decorated war hero who still carries the physical and emotional scars from his military service. Even before Dern has the results of the autopsy, vicious rumors begin to circulate that the killer must be Noah Bluestone, a Native American WWII veteran who has recently returned to Jewel with a Japanese wife.

For me, not this author’s best…
Revisado: 01-15-24
Kind of dark with to many characters and names to remember for an audio book. Plus there was no character that I was particularly fond of… which is unusual for me.
But, as usual with this author, I always appreciate his descriptive and colorful descriptions of the scenery, the settings and the land where the story takes place.

Yet his daughter has chosen this dismal time of year in which to marry, and Cork is understandably uneasy. His concern comes to a head when a man camping in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness goes missing. As the official search ends with no recovery in sight, Cork is asked by the man's family to stay on the case.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-03-23
I have loved this series…but this book was an exception. Too many names to remember, the plot didn’t always hold together for me and the character’s personal relationships lacked reality. I’d recommend skipping this one.
At one point, I got so irritated with the story line that I had to stop listening and go to another author for a while. Anyway, I plan to stay away from this series for now. I hope this book was just an exception and the next book is wonderful.

Great story…not such a great performance.
Revisado: 04-08-22
I am a woman and I was drawn to the story for multiple reasons. However, I almost quit listening after the first 20 minutes because the reader’s voice was so distracting. Luckily the story drew me in, and for a long while I was able to ignore the annoying predictability of the reader’s phrasing. Then, as the story moved forward, I realized that I really wanted to like the main male character… but I couldn’t, based on lack of emotion and unfortunate monotone delivery that the reader gave him (which was the same voice for all the male characters).
All that aside, I liked the story very much and I loved the parallels that tied women’s plight in a fictitious setting to the difficulties experienced by today’s women.

You can never tell whose story will speak to you...
Revisado: 02-05-20
This is a true story about a talented and troubled young man who managed to survive his adventures and now tells his story. James Taylor’s gentle voice reads to us with bits and pieces of his music woven in for illustration. I grew up in California, I was married to a musician and I spent a fair amount of my youth on the East Coast - including Boston and Martha’s Vineyard. I felt very connected to the story - I laughed a little and cried a bit...and I loved it!
