Historia
The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident", he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment.

Never cared about the character. It just felt like he was handed a pretty good situation that he just couldn't figure out how to capitalize on. meh

Revisado: 11-25-24
a story about an animal suffering. the abuses of humans from the animal's perspective. a perfectly fine story in general, but the author made one pretty big mistake. he made it a very big deal that the boy that the dragon falls in love with in the beginning of the book has lost his soul. but he never digs into what that means, why people know what this means, why people can just look at him and tell, so I never cared that Rue was a "soul boy."
There was also a consistent pattern of the dragon, multiple names, coming to hate something about the human world, or some specific humans, and vowing to kill them all in a fiery death! And then it all just melting into nothing because of a moment of kindness or he finally got to eat. It made his vehemence pretty weak.

I thought Peter Pan was a myth and Neverland a fairy tale. A story spun by my mother who had lost her mind a long time ago. But there was no denying the overwhelming shadow cast by Peter Pan when he was standing in my house.

The first book in a new environmental epic fantasy series set in a world where ships kept afloat by magical hearthfires sail an endless grass sea. On the never-ending, miles-high expanse of prairie grasses known as the Forever Sea, Kindred Greyreach, hearthfire keeper and sailor aboard harvesting vessel The Errant, is just beginning to fit in with the crew of her new ship when she receives devastating news. Her grandmother--The Marchess, legendary captain and hearthfire keeper--has stepped from her vessel and disappeared into the sea.

Many good to great things, some problems
Revisado: 03-05-24
I liked the book, and would in general recommend it to fantasy readers with the caveat that has problems.
The book contains a very cool world, a complex main character that I vascilated between liking and nearly hating, and wonderful word choice and descriptions from the author.
But *spoilers following* it is also framed in the "story told far in the future" that is just confusing and doesn't add anything but questions that never get answered. There are times when the writing is overly abstract and confusing or clunky in ways the author probably thought was clever repetition. The antagonists were extremely black and white - very clearly "bad guys' - so when in the times I hated Kindred it made it hard to care because I couldn't root for anyone.

The stories were all wrong—Hook was never the villain. For two centuries, all of the Darling women have disappeared on their 18th birthday. Sometimes they’re gone for only a day, some a week or a month. But they always return broken. Now, on the afternoon of my 18th birthday, my mother is running around the house making sure all the windows are barred and the doors locked. But it’s pointless. Because when night falls, he comes for me. And this time, the Never King and the Lost Boys aren’t willing to let me go.

Gritty and hot
Revisado: 12-04-23
Winny was really sexually aware and knowledgeable for being only 18 and only screwing high school footballers. Might have felt more believable if aged up a tad or more time given to backstory with prostitutes.
Otherwise, people motivations are... a bit flat, but fine for something this length.
I couldn't put it down.

Loved it so much more than I expected
Revisado: 07-14-23
the trope of the honorable scoundrel feels very overdone, so I came into this book expecting it to only be okay. But it swept me up right away, and I loved every minute of it. The writing is fabulous! The setting is fabulous! The characters are fabulously believable!

Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

I never liked Rin, so never liked the story
Revisado: 06-15-23
I'm the type of reader who needs to like my main characters for me to dig a book. Every time I turned around, I was really annoyed with Rin. Her reactions to things make her look stupid after she's presented in the very beginning as uniquely brilliant. But then she's immature and petty? Yuck.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Historia
Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans and those they thought were gods changes forever. Now only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer; Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom; and Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people. The Age of Myth is over. The time of rebellion has begun.

ungodly boring
Revisado: 12-27-20
I studied through 3 hours of this book and couldn't bring myself to listen anymore. I couldn't care less about any of the characters he parades past, the threads of story are compelled uninteresting, and how working is not terribly exciting either. Really disappointed after all the hype I read about it.
