Historia
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Kind of generic. I expected better.
Revisado: 01-23-25
I was so excited for this to come out and was really looking forward to it. I enjoy Felicia Day and expected to really like this. It wasn't terrible but I was pretty disappointed overall. The basic story of a chosen one who failed is okay but a lot of the details and story specifics were just blatant rip-offs of Buffy (She even refers to the main character as "Prophecy Girl" at one point)
The second main character, the teenager, I absolutely could not stand. There was nothing likeable about this character whatsoever. I think she was supposed to be sweet and quirky but I just wanted to smack her most of the time and her voice was awful.
The voice acting itself was good but sometimes listening to it got on my nerves because it was trying way too hard to be high energy and quirky and it just was grating after a while.
I didn't hate this by any means, it was okay and I managed to finish it (and I was fairly entertained I admit) but I expected better from Felicia Day and certainly something more original than what this ended up being.
Not bad, but not great.

Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world - and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror - a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.

Excellently written book that didn't grab me.
Revisado: 10-12-24
I have to agree with the other reviewer that said none of the characters connected. This book is extremely well written, descriptive and has an interesting and unique story. And for some reason I had a really difficult time getting through it. It didn't hold my attention and I have absolutely no idea why. The narration and storytelling was excellent and genre-wise it's right up my alley. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it. It's a good book, but I'm glad it's finished.

Gen Xers don't miss this little gem!
Revisado: 09-19-23
Calico Kids is delightfully nostalgic without a trace of hokiness or pandering to the genre or people who remember how badly we all wanted to have an adventure like this over summer vacation. I would have absolutely loved this book at 13 and I enjoyed the hell out of it at 44. Nicely done. the fact that there is an accompanying Spotify playlist is a really fun and emersive bonus.

For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms – but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation is starting to question the Priory's purpose. To the north, in the Queendom of Inys, Sabran the Ambitious has married the new King of Hróth, narrowly saving both realms from ruin. Their daughter, Glorian, trails in their shadow – exactly where she wants to be. The dragons of the East have slept for centuries. Dumai has spent her life in a Seiikinese mountain temple, trying to wake the gods from their long slumber.

Very thorough and impressive in it's scope
Revisado: 06-16-23
I absolutely hated one of the narrator's. Every single thing they said was in a breathy, soft voice that I think was supposed to sound calming and enlightened but just left me annoyed and bored. I had to force myself to pay attention and not fall asleep whenever the story returned to that section of the story because that narrator's performance drove me nuts. All of the other performances were very solid and other than that I can see why people are impressed with this book. It''s very involved and the story itself is decent. It sometimes felt like just one recitation after another of names, titles and places that bordered on self indulgence on the author's part but I can't fault her dedication to detail. I haven't read Priory of the Orange Tree but I might. I didn't love this, but I liked it well enough. It held my attention enough to get through all 35+ hours of it.

"Three knives were buried up to their brass cross guards in the man's chest. Richard recognized the knife handles. All three were the style carried by the men of the First File. He looked from those blades that should have killed the big man, up to his face. That was when he realized the true horror of the situation, and the reason for the unbearable stench of death." Sequel to the #1 New York Times best seller The Omen Machine.

This is absolutely the worst book he's written. I absolutely hated every second of it and I want my credit back. Just awful. repetitive and poorly written drivel.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 12-18-22
Probably the best book I read this year. There were a couple of spots that were difficult to get through that involved some violence and animal cruelty but it was necessary to move the story forward and not enough of a deterrent to suggest not reading it. Read this book!
