This book has gotten very sterling reviews, so I found myself surprised by the strength of my dislike for it. In my view, it was a series of descriptions of the very "magical" circus connected by an undercooked plot. As for the love story--both characters were so dull, I had little interest in what became of them. Even though the word magical appeared countless times in this book, I found it was far from it.

Disappointing

I was greatly looking forward to listening to this book because I admired Bel Canto, the author's previous novel, so much and because Run had gotten excellent reviews. Unfortunately, the book did not meet my expectations. It managed to be both melodramatic and boring at the same time. Despite the dramatic revelations that occur at various turns throughout the book, I found my attention wandering constantly. Part of the problem was the shallowness of the characters--Teddy is the warm, open one, Tip is the cerebral, emotionally stunted one, Sullivan is the prodigal son and so on. Finally, I could not understand the author's decision to set this book during a 24 hour period. It would have been much more interesting to see how these characters reacted to life-altering events of the day over the course of time instead of having them underreact and wait for a lot of cabs (as boring to read about as to do) over a period 24 hours

A disappointment

I found this book to be a disappointment. It had an intriguing premise-a mystery about the murder of an abortion doctor. But the characters were incompletely drawn and in the case of the doctor's daughter, intensely dislikable. In addition, many of the scenes in the book were implausible.

It was engaging enough to want to finish to find out what happened--but overall only a fair mystery story.

A Jewel of a Book

This book is probably not for everyone. Not a lot happens and a lot of the big things that do happen take place off stage. But I thought it was just wonderful. The author uses a series of scenes from the lives of each of the characters to give us a fully realized picture of one family's life. No melodrama-but I had tears in my eyes a the end.

A Better than Average Coming of Age Story

I am a long-time fan of Gail Godwin and although this isnt' one of her best books, I found it very enjoyable. The basic plot is a fairly familiar one-spunky young career girl gets started on her profession while dealing with love and ambition. However, what sets this book apart is the backdrop of Miami just after Castro came to power. The political issues related to the Cuban immigrants are woven into the story with a great deal of skill. They are not just an add-on --they fit into Emma Gant's new world. And the author did a great job describing Miami-I felt like I was there

S is for Silence

I thought this was a refreshing change in the alphabet series. Instead of writing the entire story from the point of view of Kinsey, the way she usually does, Grafton, switched back and forth between the past and present and gave the reader the view of numerous characters involved in the mystery. She did a great job of capturing the viewpoints of the various characters--especially the teenage girls.

I found the story very engaging throughout. I was disappointed in the ending--I felt like the mystery was not truly resolved. In fact, I was so concerned about this, that I went to a bookstore and skimmed the end of the book to be sure I hadn''t skipped part of the audio inadvertently. Otherwise, I enjoyed this book a great deal and l thought the reader did a great job.
