I liked the narrator of this book. He read the book well—steadily, but not sleep-inducing. I also appreciated the clear signals given when breaks in the text occurred, so that I didn’t get lost.

It’s pointless to review the book PERSUASION itself, so I will only note that the narrator for this audiobook is very clear and engaging, making an enjoyable listening experience.

This podcast does an excellent job telling true stories of Arkansas and Oklahoma, focusing on the Arkansas River Valley and the Ouachita Mountains, that add depth to the story of TRUE GRIT and bring to life the late 19th century in a fresh and exciting way. Best of all, the show is staffed by locals who understand the region and who are passionate in telling the stories of the places they call home.

Lepore’s book sweeps the reader along on a journey through American history from the founding of the nation through 2016. What is most stunning is how Lepore connects themes across American history and makes them come alive for the reader. I especially appreciated her discussions of the polling industry.

This book is excellent! The author is conversational and makes the subject (a history of and commentary on US infrastructure from the viewpoint of an engineer who is also a historian of engineering) very accessible. The author, Dr. Petroski, teaches lessons both from the successes and the failures of infrastructure, and stories he tells (like the development of concrete, macadam, and asphalt, and the story of how the Interstate Highway System had its genesis in a World War I-era cross-country military maneuver in which then-Lieutenant Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower was a participant) are memorable and bring humanity to the subject. The narrator does a wonderful job reading this book as well.

SEIZE THE DAY is a novel about Tommy Wilhelm (né Wilhelm Adler), a man who is trying to make something of his life after a series of disappointments, failures, and bad luck. A marriage on the edge of divorce and an affair on the edge of marriage (if the divorce should come through), Wilhelm’s relationship with his father, the aging Dr. Adler (a medical doctor), and the decision to invest his life’s savings in lard futures—these are the concerns of Wilhelm’s present as he tries to “make something of himself” and “find himself” in New York City.

A remarkable novel by Canadian-American novelist Saul Bellow, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and three-time winner of the National Book Award for Fiction.

CW: family death, racist language

This poignant story follows the experiences of one family, the Folletts, just before the death of the father, Jay, through just after the funeral is completed. It centers on the experience of Jay’s young son, Rufus, although Jay’s wife, Mary, and brother-in-law Andrew are also major characters, along with (to a lesser degree) Jay’s daughter, Catherine, younger than Rufus. It is told with Agee’s characteristic pathos and beautiful, ecstatic prose. Agee died suddenly before this book was published, making his Pulitzer Prize win for it a posthumous one; however, that by no means indicates that the story is not substantially complete. Agee’s work, even if it may not have looked exactly as he had envisioned it had he lived, is a stunning, heartbreaking account that has its funny moments, too. This book is well-worth a read.

An Excellent Novel & Terrific Audiobook

This novel, a strange and wonderful tale, is told in the voice of its narrator, Keiko, a woman in her 30s who has been working as a part-time employee in the same Japanese convenience store for 18 years.

While I can’t speak to the specific resonance of the book in a Japanese context, I know from working these types of “unskilled” service jobs myself in the United States that Keiko’s voice rings true.

This novel mostly traces the thoughts and feelings of Keiko as she struggles to find her place within her social circle (i.e., her family), but it relies more upon the terrific sketching of Keiko as a character and of the way in which sees the world than on any action-driven plot (think of Walker Percy’s THE MOVIEGOER). To be clear: this is not a criticism. The book pulls this off seemingly effortlessly.

The narration is excellent, with changes in tone for the various characters. It is an engaging experience throughout. All in all, this novel—& this audiobook—are excellent.

In this text, Ishmael Reed lays out his history with Malcolm X and other Civil Rights leaders of the past and of the present and how they have shaped the way he sees the world. A powerful, engaging work, read by Read with warmth and dignity.
