Historia
Seth Andrews wasn't an idiot during his 30 years as an evangelical Christian. He wasn't unintelligent, nor did his IQ shift when he ultimately left religion entirely. He considered himself thoughtful, moral, reasonable, and at least as smart as the average person. In other words, he wasn't an idiot. Yet strangely, he often sounded like one.

The topic was interesting to me, but what really drew me in is Seth Andrews’ performance. His years in radio hosting was evident, and he kept me engaged.

Historia
Misinformation affects all of us on a daily basis—from social media to larger political challenges, from casual conversations in supermarkets, to even our closest relationships. While we recognize the dangers that misinformation poses, the problem is complex—far beyond what policing social media alone can achieve—and too often our limited solutions are shaped by partisan politics and individual interpretations of truth. In Misbelief, preeminent social scientist Dan Ariely argues that to understand the irrational appeal of misinformation, we must first understand the behavior of “misbelief”.

Perfect pairing

I’ve listened to almost all of Dan Ariely’s books. Very well written, interesting observation and results, engaging and conversational. Along with Simon Jones as narrator, it’s a perfect paring.

Why I Am Not a Christian: Four Conclusive Reasons to Reject the Faith

Historia
Dr. Richard Carrier, world-renowned philosopher and historian, explains the four reasons he does not accept the Christian religion, describing four facts of the world that, had they been different, he would believe. Those four reasons are God's silence, God's inaction, the lack of evidence, and the way the universe looks exactly like a godless universe would, and not at all like a Christian universe would, even down to its very structure. Dr. Carrier addresses all the usual replies to these claims.

Mostly applicable
Revisado: 09-12-23
My argument is not with god, but with organized religion. This book does well; however, he repeatedly says, “atheism predicts”, which isn’t true. Science predicts! Atheism is to be “without religion”. No more, no less.

Historia
For centuries the gospels have been cherished devotional literature, and under the guidance of preachers and priests, they’ve been understood as reliable depictions of Jesus. But even the most devout Christians stumble across sayings of Jesus that don’t sound quite right. In fact - if we’re honest - some of them are alarming. But the problem won’t go away, even if many of the faithful file these troublesome texts in a mental drawer marked “Too uncomfortable to think about”. In fact, the problem is much larger than many people suppose.

Historia
On the morning of April 26, 1986, Europe witnessed the worst nuclear disaster in history: the explosion of a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine. Dozens died of radiation poisoning, fallout contaminated half the continent, and thousands fell ill. In Chernobyl, Serhii Plokhy draws on new sources to tell the dramatic stories of the firefighters, scientists, and soldiers who heroically extinguished the nuclear inferno. He lays bare the flaws of the Soviet nuclear industry....

Detailed! UNBELIEVABLY detailed?
Revisado: 06-01-21
This book is crazy detailed, sometimes unbelievably so. Other places the detail was off putting, boring even. There were 10 minutes dedicated to the sandbagging operation, with painfully detailed reconstruction of conversation and personal accounts. Honestly, lost my interest. I’ve read (listened) other books on the subject that were more palatable for me.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

I’ve listened to this book more than once. I was very young when the event happened, and barely remember any news on it. After this book I understand why it wasn’t better known, as the event was shrouded in secrecy from behind the iron curtain of the USSR. It’s incredible to think that an extinction level event occurred during my lifetime. It’s even more amazing that human ingenuity stopped the catastrophe before that happened. The Soviets caused the accident because of faulty equipment and propensity to shirk procedure, but they rose to the occasion when it was most important. Every responder deserves our gratitude.

Misleading title. Felt like I was being sold something
Revisado: 09-08-20
After a short introduction, the subject turned to the pros of TRT. That is fine and stuff. To reach his own, especially a group who might have pituitary disjunction, but the isn’t me. I’m a “natty”. My natural test levels are OK, I’m looking looking for lifestyle habits that will mitigate the natural drop in hormones as I age. I thought this book would include that, but it revolves around medical intervention.

Profound!
Revisado: 07-24-18
The information was mind blowing. I’ve tried a lot of things, a lot of diets, most often with the “eat less, move more” approach. After understanding that weight is a hormonally controlled function of the body and applying some principles talked about, I successfully shed 59 lbs. in just 5 months. The best part is the weight isn’t rushing back like it did all the other times.

Revisado: 06-17-18
I originally read this book because I desperately wanted to lose weight, but couldn't find a diet that I could comply with. Meal planning, especially, was hard for me with having a young family and not having much knowledge on nutrition. A friend turned me onto Dr. Fung's book The Obesity Code, and Audible recommended this book as a result. Learning to fast took some adjustment, but I've I got the hang of it the results were incredible. I lost 48 lbs in a little over 2 months and a total of 56 lbs by the 3rd month. I decided to go back to intermittent fasting as a maintenance and I do that easily every day. Good book! Very helpful!

Historia
While many denominations claim to be growing, the largest group in American religious life is the disillusioned - people who have been involved in the church yet see few similarities between the church's life and the person of Jesus. In the midst of elaborate programming, professional worship teams, and political crusades, they ask, "Is this really what Jesus called us to do?" While the church has dismissed these people as uncommitted and lacking in faith, perhaps the opposite is true. Their commitment to authentic spirituality over institutional idolatry might be the very corrective the church needs.

Short story, but great content.
Revisado: 09-25-17
I was apprehensive about this title. As someone who walked away from Christianity entirely for awhile, it was reaffirming to hear that I wasn’t alone, and some of the things that drove the wedge weren’t just imagined. Additionally, it was comforting that the message came from someone who is still inside, and there is someone that is doing the right thing.
