I was a bit leery of Whitehead's intentions after reading the early reviews...an actual railroad? The book's quick inclusion on Oprah's list was encouraging. Having now completed the book, I'm completely okay.

My apprehension was based out of concern that this metaphorical railroad could in some way soften or glamorize slavery. I'm glad to say that my apprehension was resolved early and repeatedly. My only regret is that Cora and her rescuers didn't kill the slave catcher, Ridgeway, in Indiana. And the church said...Amen!!

Many thanks to Mr. Whitehead for overcoming his own doubts and writing on this difficult subject and doing so in such a powerful way. Well done. Young man!!

I have loved Clancy's books over the years and was pleased to see his protege carrying-on in his stead. Great, timely story telling and always compelling characters, old and new.
