Susy Branch (Tavi Gevinson) and Nick Lansing (Adam DiMarco) aren’t into each other, but they share a similar problem. Susy is a down-on-her-luck socialite who doesn’t want to get a real job, and Nick is a struggling writer who’s tired of tutoring the kids of the one percent. All of their wealthier friends are getting married, to seemingly lucrative results. So, Susy and Nick devise a plan: have a wedding.

Charming, witty story about surviving and seeking love in this modern era. The dialogue is snappy and the social commentary is subtle and biting.

This was an excellent series! A Los Angeles-based mystery noir for the modern age. The writing, acting and sound production were all superb. I tore through all the episodes much too quickly and was so disappointed to reach the end. The various storylines resolved in smart and gratifying ways. Bravo! I hope there might be a second season.

The twists were just plausible enough to keep me listening. All the episodes had top rate sound production and suberb voice acting.

So much potential!

So much potential!
Revisado: 08-04-24
The first several episodes held me rapt. A series based in a futuristic, dystopic, cyber-noir setting! What's not to love? A smart, geopolitical premise wherein expansionist China moves in on Japan. Wow!
Unfortunately, the episodes began to meander pointlessly from the primary story arc. Also, the "romance" felt annoying and irrelevant.
I my opinion, this would be perfect if it were trimmed down and shaped into a novel. Or into a tighter audio serial.
Excellent voice acting throughout.

Revisado: 08-04-24
This was listenable for the most part, but the storyline was forced through utterly implausible twists. The narration was great, however.

Historia
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

Mad Libs in Plot Direction
Revisado: 11-26-23
Parts of this were very listenable, immensely clever and fun to follow. However, the random and absurd plot twists ended up ruining the overall experience for me. It seemed as if someone put a handful of loosely related scenarios and storylines onto scraps of paper. These pieces of paper were then placed into a jar. Every few chapters a new slip was pulled out.
This might be fun for an improv class, but it became ridiculous when attempting to develop a scifi story. Which is too bad, because I love full-cast, made-for-radio productions.

Historia
Before: In Bristol’s center lies the Croft, a digital no-man’s-land cut off from the surveillance, Big Data dependence, and corporate-sponsored, globally hegemonic aspirations that have overrun the rest of the world. Ten years in, it’s become a center of creative counterculture. But it’s fraying at the edges, radicalizing from inside. How will it fare when its chief architect, Rushdi Mannan, takes off to meet his boyfriend in New York City - now the apotheosis of the new techno-utopian global metropolis?

The narrator is WAY too intense-
Revisado: 03-15-23
It was almost impossible to get a sense of the story, or for the characters, because the narrator was freakily intense. He injected hystrionic melodrama into almost every aspect of the story - breathing heavily, voice shaking, whispering and then SHRIEKING at times. Ultimately, his over-the-top emoting led me to cringe away from most of the characters, and I doubt that is what the author intended. Perhaps I'll read it on Kindle at some point.

Hard to say when the human species fractured exactly. Harder to say when this new talent arrived. But Lion Zorn is the first of his kind—an empathy tracker, an emotional soothsayer, with a felt sense for the future of the we. In simpler terms, he can spot cultural shifts and trends before they happen. It’s a useful skill for a certain kind of company.

Clever cyberpunk concepts -
Revisado: 08-24-19
In general, I enjoyed this book. It explored clever future-culture concepts. And I love how it touched on the pointless horror of animal cruelty (including hunting) without being unnecessarily graphic. However, the hipster voice in which the story was written was self-conscious and forced, almost embarrassing. Lion, the lead character, came across as someone playing the role of "Cool Guy" on TV. Since he was supposedly an intuitive trend finder, his lack of complexity and emotional depth ruined the effect for me.
