Greg describes in beautifully accessible language his journey to be known, to be loved, and to give back that love as he wrestled through what it meant for him to be both gay and Christian. He shines a spotlight on the depth of relationship that is possible when we are fully known to each other, fully loved by each other while being first and foremost passionately in love with Jesus.

Greg and I have reached very different conclusions about what it looks like to love Jesus passionately as LGBTQ believers. Greg pursuing celibacy and me finding a biblical ground for same sex marriage. Yet I found myself nodding vigorously and spontaneously shouting “Yes!,” time after time as he described the depth and joy of relationship that is possible when love is allowed to lead. Relationships that drive out loneliness whether single or married. Relationships that are rich with connection and meaning and soul-stirring moments of vulnerability.

I loved his conclusion to press forward in this conversation by encouraging individuals to lean into their love for Jesus, to wrestle with the Bible, to listen for the Spirit, and to reach their own conclusion about what it means to passionately follow Jesus no matter where he leads.

Differing conclusions aside, I feel privileged to share this journey of following Jesus with Greg where love for Jesus translates daily into love for people.

Moved to tears

I was moved to tears often during this very insightful and intimate look at how the LGBTQ community has come to be vilified by large segments of our culture. It is staggering to discover the degree of misinformation and mistreatment directed toward the LGBTQ community often by well-respected people who uncritically accepted untested conclusions and ideas. As a Christian pastor I was part of a group that accepted and propagated such ideas. Many of my tears are tears of sorrow and repentance for the part I played that has brought such harm to the LGBTQ community at large and to individual LGBTQ people, not the least of which include my own two gay sons. If your heart is in conflict with your head or your faith as mine was for over two decades, this is the book that will help you get them aligned, allowing love for God and love for all His people to go forward hand in hand. I highly recommend this book.

I have a friend who is deep down the rabbit hole of conspiracy thinking. I was initially attracted to this book because it has dedicated chapters addressing my friend’s conspiracy. As good as these chapters were, I found the greatest value of the book in the beginning chapters which lay out a strategy for engaging my friend in ways most likely to gain me a hearing. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a thoughtful way to engage a friend or family member who may be caught in conspiracy thinking.
