Historia
Swept away from Louisiana bayou country as a child, Miranda Miller is a woman without a past. She has a husband and child of her own and a fulfilling job in a Manhattan museum, but she also has questions - about the tragedy that cut her off from family and caused her to be sent away and about those first five years of her life, which were erased from her memory entirely. Summoned to the bedside of Willy Pedreaux, the old caretaker of her grandparents' antebellum estate, Miranda goes back to Louisiana at last, hoping to learn the truths of her past and receive her rightful inheritance.

I wanted to like this story, the MC was so unlikeable she got on my nerves. She did nothing but complain the entire time about her kid and if she wasn't a good mom. If felt like she didn't want to be a mom or something. The book was also EXTREMELY slow. It gave up around chapter 11 when it hadn't picked up. Maybe it gets better later in the book but I couldn't keep going.

I’m the right-hand man of the mafia king. She’s a girl with a past she’s desperate to hide. But I need something from her. And I know she won’t help me. Not willingly. She’ll need some persuading. Lucky for her, I can do that. Something about this girl makes me curious, though, and it’s more than the scars that line her back.

Trauma, trauma and more trauma
Revisado: 08-12-23
I wanted mafia romance and expected a darkness but not like this. The author romanticized abuse and Giovanni was emotionally and physically abusive using sex as a punishment. He took what he wanted when she said no and never asked consent. Amelia is one of the most frustrating characters I’ve read about in many years. She is so dumb and has so much trauma I’m shocked she isn’t catatonic. It feels like she wants to do a dom and sub relationship but what they have is straight abuse. Do not waste your time on this book.

Historia
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

Revisado: 11-29-21
I love the idea of this story but I wanted more from the writer. They describe mrs. Perivale as curious but when the opportunity for the writing to show that, it doesn't. It kind of feels like a first draft or something. There isn't enough of anything and I really wanted to like this book.

Released from the magic pokey and paroled with limited power is enough to make any witch grumpy. However, if you throw in a recently resurrected cat, a lime-green Kia, and a sexy egotistical werewolf, it's enough to make a gal fly off the edge. Not to mention a mission...with no freaking directions. So here I sit in Asscrack, West Virginia, trying to figure out how to complete my mysterious mission before All Hallows Eve when I'll get turned into a mortal.

Wanted it to be so good
Revisado: 02-10-21
I started out with high hopes for this book. I love modern fantasy books, and the general plot of this book had so much great potential. There was hardly any flow to the book just jumpy scenes. It felt like the author didn't know how to to write the middle of the book. There was this ongoing joke about her cat licking its self and I guess it was suppose to be funny but that particular plot twist was uncomfortably not funny. There was no character development and a lot of tell not show. When dramatic stuff happened I didn't care at all because the effort hadn't been put into make me care. There was some Sabrina the teen age inspiration which I didn't hate. The pop culture references could have been funny it the voice of the main character was less snarky, sarcastic, funny and more mean. I don't mind the main character being an anti-hero but I wouldn't even call her that. It felt like the book wasn't fleshed out all the way. AND then, there where a few weird things that made me question why they even put them in the book at all. Over all, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone to read. It could've been so good too.

Wanted to like it
Revisado: 03-15-20
I'm going to try not to spoil anything for those who do want to give this book a read, I've warned you.
Alright first and foremost, I loved the first half of the book. The idea was really interesting and I was excited to see where it was going. I had a problem with the second half and the end.
Pro's of the book
- Worlding building is interesting and I love how they mention it being modern. (cars, electricity, science being a common idea)
- (spoilers) She mix magic in with the modern world well. She don't make it feel like Harry Potter magic and how it's a big bag secret. The people of the city just think magic not real, or that it's part of stories, but it wasn't a bad when a none magic person found out.
- She had a government but they aren't evil in a way that they where an antongist and they didn't make the witches well special or better they exist and that okay.
-The different types of witches, vine witches, kitchen witches, brewing potions, ect. I liked the day to day view of witch life in this book.
She explain magic in an easy way and make it part of the world like it's always been there, but only the witches notice it. She also don't talk down or bad about about none magic people. She just exist as part of the natural world. It was refreshing.
- She make it still feel old world and modern.
- The main character is an adult
Cons:
- She don't tell you what time period it is. I don't know why this bothers me but it does
- Romance not build up or felt earned.
-Information dumb, not just once but three or four times. Not shown but told.
-I found the second half of the book to not be set up as well as the first half. It felt rushed and I found myself kinda bored. I wanted more from the characters from the world. The plot was just rushed. I wanted more back story about her and explanation and demonstration about her witchy powers. I wanted more intimate time with the characters.
- (spoilers) I grew to hate the main character. She was boring, and unreliable. The Author claim she is powerful, smart and even pointed out how many books she read; self educated. She even reads a rare and dark magic book about blood magic( one copy). Maybe 10 people, in the world, have access to this book, and she never connects the blood magic to the villain.
- (spoilers) there are two antagonist in this book and neither of them did I care about. She got lucky the fist one turned to dust.(was kind of interesting if she had been given more time to develop) The Demon and Blood magic was actually interesting.
- (spoilers) No one talked to each other. I know some plots thrive off of no communication but this was against the law. Magic Kidnapping and misuse of magic and the magic cops where never told once , but they frame her for murder? with minimal evidence might I add. Then there was no resolve on the lack of communication. The grandmother just kills herself without giving a proper apology.
I guess if you've gotten this far, thanks for reading my long rant. I was disappointed and wanted more of everything. It could have been a really good book but it's only okay. I won't read the second book, if there is one.

Need More please and minor spoilers!
Revisado: 03-12-20
This whole series was amazing! I love how each series are different narrator and character but it all takes place in the same town. Now book four, I knew Molly harpers writing trope but I'm still about it (spoiler?). Each chapter bounces between the main female and her future lover. I have to admit, at first I didn't like it but it made me want to keep reading.
This particular book I think is my second favorite book of the series. I love that the main character ( spoiler) was the only person who wasn't magic, it was refreshing. I connected the most with her, having the voice of reason and normality. Molly Harpers take on Selkies was different fun and didn't take it self too seriously. Maybe that's what I love the most, how this book doesn't take itself too seriously.

modern adult fantasy!
Revisado: 03-12-20
I wasn't sure I was even going to like this book. It started kind of slow and part of the book was predictable. I love a book that builds a great world around itself and this book did that. There are even some very steamy scenes that I wasn't expecting. This book is funny, and I loved that It was for adults but it is kind of silly and light. If you want to read a modern adult fantasy book with a little mystery and not as heavy as Harry Potter.

Great Story Narration kinda annoying.
Revisado: 09-07-17
I love all of Gail Carriger's books they are written really well and they build the universe up more. The narration is kind of annoying. The inner dialog and the narration voice are two different voices and it was kind of distracting. Overall i really enjoyed it and y'all should read it!!!
