Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Meh
Revisado: 02-13-25
I keep buying these books because of nostalgia for the old Harry Bosch series. But Renee was such an uninteresting character compared to Bosch. This one is a simple police procedural with a minimal sprinkle of suspense and no emotions.

Historia
March, 1815. The Bourbon King Louis XVIII has been restored to the throne of France, Napoleon is in exile on the isle of Elba, and Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife, Hero, have traveled to Paris in hopes of tracing his long-lost mother, Sophie, the errant Countess of Hendon. But his search ends in tragedy when he comes upon the dying Countess in the wasteland at the tip of the Île de la Cité. Stabbed—apparently with a stiletto—and thrown from the bastions of the island's ancient stone bridge, Sophie dies without naming her murderer.

Fantastic Book, Flawed Narration
Revisado: 09-13-24
This was one of the best stories among the 17 books published in the Sebastián St Cyr series. Unfortunately the incomparable narrator of the series, Davina Porter, retired and was replaced by Jenny Sterlin. Her pace was slow but I was able to set the speed to 1.1x so it’s not a problem. She was a competent narrator and was able to mimic the voices used for Hinden, Jarvis, and Hero in previous books. But Sebastian’s voice was entirely different and it was similar enough to Hero’s that I got confused as to who was speaking sometimes. Also, some of her French pronunciations were just awkward.

Historia
Called out by Scotland Yard into the teeth of a violent blizzard, Inspector Ian Rutledge finds himself confronted with one of the most savage murders he has ever encountered. Rutledge might have expected such unspeakable carnage on the World War I battlefields, where he’d lost much of his soul - and his sanity - but not in an otherwise peaceful farm kitchen in remote Urskdale. Someone has murdered the Elcott family at their table without the least sign of struggle.

Very Slow paced

Lots of repetitive hashing of possible suspects and why. I was tempted to just skip to the last chapters but pushed on despite having wandered off and skipping ahead many times.

There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

Unusual Historical Setting for a Love Story
Revisado: 01-22-24
Set in the period preceding the Irish Civil War, the book imagined a time travel love story between close friends and compatriots of Michael Collins. The weaving of the historical timeline into the main plot was really well done. The narration was also fantastic.

The lilt was especially pronounced when she narrated Mariana’s parts. It made her sound frivolous.

Historia
Waterhouse leads a quiet, ordered life as a retired police detective - a life that takes a surprising turn when she encounters Kelly Cross, a habitual offender, dragging a young child through town. Both appear miserable and better off without each other-or so decides Tracy, in a snap decision that surprises herself as much as Kelly. Suddenly burdened with a small child, Tracy soon learns her parental inexperience is actually the least of her problems, as much larger ones loom for her and her young charge.

Very slow paced
Revisado: 04-23-23
The plot meandered for a long while. The author slathered on thick biographical details, anecdotes and endless musings in each lead character’s head. And there were as many lead characters as there were plot threads which the author eventually made intersect. I would have stopped listening if I hadn’t like the previous two books in the series so much.

Narration was a problem
Revisado: 04-12-23
The duke’s voice made him sound like an old oaf of a man and Padua and Eve giggly, hysterical girls. Lance should be a complex and dark but under this narrator he was entirely one dimensional.

Narrator ruined the experience
Revisado: 04-10-23
I liked the story and Ms Hunter’s writing style. The pseudo-BDSM scene was a little awkward but it didn’t hurt the flow. The narrator, though, was horrible. She made these high-pitched exclamations that made Padua sound silly from time to time and the Duke a stupid oaf.
