Half French, half German, she is happy to be back in France, where her husband, Gregor, a retired colonel, will join her soon from Germany. Barely even a story here…
Revisado: 03-12-25
I’ve been a DS fan since the beginning and have read them all. Her early books were amazing but she’s lost that edge now and just skirts by pushing out low quality repetitive books one after the other. All the while banking on her old reputation which seems to work for her. Of late I’ve read some fantastic historical fiction books and once you read a Kristen Hannah or Kristen Harmel then a DS becomes annoyingly simple. This ‘historical fiction’ just barely skims the surface of historical content… barely.

Felt more like advertising than a story.
Revisado: 11-28-24
I’ve never read a book before that constantly brought up product names… guessing there is commission or something for doing it but I found it annoying for some reason. Also the constant descriptions of wines and cheeses and chocolates started to feel like space filler because it was so repetitive. The actual story was just fine but the other issues detracted from me really getting into the actual story unfortunately.

A bad narrator ruins a good book…

I started this multiple times and every time the narrator made me so crazy that I stopped listening. Monotone and strange pauses. A bad narrator ruins a good book…

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Such an incredible story and even though it was ‘fiction’ it brought history back to life in a very real yet tragic way.

The story is thin and never fully developed
Revisado: 08-15-24
Disappointed… I am a huge DS fan… have read all her books but she has lost the ability to write anything original anymore. Maybe because she’s written so many books over the years. Her early books had historical detail and spanned decades drawing you in to the lives of those she wrote about. They were magical. The last few years her books have become repetitive… she fills the books with repeated content… over and over again. I preordered Joy and was excited when I read the book description but…’while the concept of the book is interesting… it’s all over the place and you never really get to know any of the characters. Even the main character is thinly written about and the story hops from year to year with barely any content. I’m just disappointed because i REALLY want to have the old DS writer back… hohum

Great story BUT things moved far too fast…
Revisado: 07-29-23
I wanted to like this book… it had such great promise but DS just barely skimmed over all the layers. Never felt like I really connected to any of them and that was frustrating. The basis for the story held so many possibilities for a truly great book to evolve but just as a story line would develop it would end two paragraphs later. Just a very thin story overall and even though it had ‘moments’ of interest… it just fell flat. So disappointed.

The story that never seems to go anywhere. Way to many directions that never really develop. I kept waiting for the story but it was much to do about nothing really. I didn’t hate it but certainly seen better DS books over the years.

I’ve struggled the last several years to get through the later DS books. The lack of strong storyline and constant repetition turn me off but this one… THIS ONE is truly a great DS book. Full circle plot and just an overall great book. Wish we could get her back to these days… ❤️

With startling insight, Danielle Steel explores women's choices: between home and adventure, between the love for family and the passion for a cause, between sacrifice and desire. But at the heart of Mirror Image is a fascinating, realistic portrait of identical twins, two vastly different sisters who lead their lives and follow their destinies against a vivid backdrop of a world at war.

Great story …. But the narration… ugh
Revisado: 01-04-23
I love revisiting the older books that DS has written. So refreshing to go back to the days when she didn’t repeat lines over and over seemingly just to fill a page in addition to the constant use of French names steadily rolling off the narrators tongue as is that might impress readers. It’s fine now and then but the more recent books have far too much of that. Anyway this is a great story and I am enjoying it BUT the narration almost made me stop the book. He’s ‘ok’ but little expression and it sounds like he’s in a tin box. Surely they can do better…
