Historia
Why are we the way we are? Who can we become? What stands in our way? In Dealing with the Devil, Tony Schwartz investigates these sweeping questions by fiercely reckoning with his own life choices, regrets, and aspirations. He confronts the shame that arose after he helped craft a persona for Donald Trump in The Art of the Deal that 30 years later aided in his election as president. He provides a window into understanding our complicated relationship with Trump, and the Trump in each of us.

Interesting but disjointed.
Revisado: 09-13-21
Felt like 3 separate books in one. One about the author’s family life, another about his regrets about working with trump, another about his work as a consultant.
Not sure there is a unifying theme. However, each of these strands are interesting on their own.
Worth it all in all.

Loved this book
Revisado: 10-03-20
I have read my share of business literature. This is by far my favorite. It is likely that I connect with this book for such reasons as being a Nigerian who spent a good chunk of years living in America but I would actually like to think it’s more than the distinctly and unapologetically Nigerian voice in which this was written that endeared me to this work.
I love that the author got down in the weeds when it came time to discuss the work he did in his business. I love that he didn’t paper over his privileged background as many authors tend to do. I appreciated how honest he was about the difficulties he and the team faced along the way, even when it came to matters of integrity.
Most importantly, Warren Buffet and other business titans whose books I have consumed are mere ideas to me. I have actually met a few Forbes list billionaires in my life. One actually told about how his big break was buying Chase Bank. I drew a blank because I had no idea how his insight could get me to buy a Chase Bank too. Yomi is relatable. Not a distant idea. And he is doing hard but good work in a place that matters. I am inspired.
I highly recommend the book. Nigeria, the world’s most misunderstood country is a character in the book. This book could be a useful tool to see Nigeria differently both for Nigerians and others who are just curious.

Useful and easily digestible.
Revisado: 02-03-20
I read a lot of business books. My least favorite ones are written by self-congratulatory founder types who reverse engineer their success and then synthesize their actions into hard and fast rules on how to succeed in business. That’s not what Horowitz did with this book.
The core of the book is that leaders should try to be authentic. Be honest. Walk the talk. Build cultures that work with who you are at your core. By leaving room for the reader to introspect and come up with what works on an individual level, this book creates something that is incredibly useful.
It is unpretentious. Not corny either. Just preaching that leaders should be real and then learn how to formalize that realness with examples from the wild from Ghengis Khan to Larry Page. Excellent book.

Amazing story tainted by unabashed hero worship
Revisado: 08-16-16
If you are skeptical about tales told by hero worshippers who crown the people about whom they write with halos, this book might be hard to swallow. I for one found myself wondering what to make of accounts of Elon Musk's heroics.
With all that said, I think the story contained a lot of detail so that it becomes easy to see the step by step progression of Musk's career so far. There were mysterious references to the suffering that Musk went through growing up but his life sounded pretty well off to me.
The reader, Fred Sanders did a good job as well.
It's worth the read but I walked away wondering if Vance truly had editorial freedom like he claimed he had in the prologue. His obsession with making excuses for Musk and telling the story like Musk could do no wrong left me wondering if Musk had a say in what was said.
Amazing accomplishments by what sounds like an amazing individual surrounded by an exceptional team of people.
Worth it.
