Drivel
Revisado: 04-28-24
This was one of the weirdest, dumbest books I’ve ever listened to. It started out great and ended so lamely. The idea was fun - a female archeologist is sent to an isolated area to study a land of primitive men. From there, everything falls apart. None of the decisions the characters make make sense. There are so many loose ends. The dialogue is basic garbage. Ugh. It’s just so awful. Avoid.

Clever mystery
Revisado: 04-06-24
I really enjoyed the characters, including the house. I didn’t enjoy all of the thinking and talking the two main characters did about their relationship. The rest of the story was fast-paced, engaging, full of surprises. I just think that the reader didn’t need SO much exposition on their innermost thoughts - the author did a thorough job giving the reader insight into their backgrounds and motivations and then gave more and more and more and it didn’t feel necessary. Other than that one thing that I disliked, I LOVED the rest of it. I hope that the two main characters and the house appear in other books. I’d love to read about their future lives.

Like all the Bedwyn men, Aidan has a reputation for cool arrogance. But this proud nobleman also possesses a loyal, passionate heart - and it is this fierce loyalty that has brought Colonel Lord Aidan to Ringwood Manor to honor a dying soldier's request. Having promised to comfort and protect the man's sister, Aidan never expected to find a headstrong, fiercely independent woman who wants no part of his protection, nor did he expect the feelings this beguiling creature would ignite in his guarded heart.

Love this series!
Revisado: 03-08-23
I love this series, but I’m not a fan of switching narrators within a series. The current narrator’s accent isn’t quite up to par when it comes to the soft, rolling Cajun accent. The way she pronounces “grandmére” with a hard “d” just grates on my nerves. The same as with the word “chère,” which sounds like there’s something unpleasant in her throat. I feel badly saying these things, but they’re real issues, as Maggie’s grandmére is an important character, so the word is brought up a lot. And, of course, everyone calls everyone “chère” throughout the story. It’s just jarring. Everything else is fantastic; story, through lines, character development, place specific detail…love it!

Revisado: 02-06-23
We listen to this series with our 11 year old and each of us enjoys different aspects of the stories. The characters, even the minor characters, are beautifully fleshed out. The descriptions of the settings are beautiful, and are beautifully reflective of the times that they existed. You can tell that the author enjoys researching details and she incorporates them into the stories, accurately and lovingly. Highly, highly recommend this series and especially, this book.

Story slightly convoluted but WORTH IT!
Revisado: 02-05-23
I wish that there was slightly more exposition at the beginning of the book and again toward the end. I felt plunged into the story as though it was the second or third of the series and that I had missed quite a bit of backstory. During CH 9, I went back and listened to the Prologue and CH 1 and felt more settled into the goings on in the book. As for the ending, I felt like too many parts of the story had been culled during editing.
HOWEVER, having said all that…I am IN LOVE with this new Sherlock Holmes world, just as I was when I discovered the Enola Holmes series.
I hope that there are many many many more to come!!

I actually loved the “silly” nicknames each girl was known by. It wasn’t like the characters called each other by their nicknames in conversation, it was more along the lines of a tongue-in-cheek secret between author and reader. I would absolutely love to hear more from these “sisters.”
