Wonderful!
Revisado: 04-30-23
I see I get honor of the first review.
The world the author created is both deep and captivating, with well-developed characters and a rich system of magic. I especially appreciated the fact that the main protagonists were female. We have series after series of young men struggling to find their way in the world. The scales were tipped a bit with this work.
If you have ever read and enjoyed the works of Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan or N.K. Jemisin, you will enjoy this series from Tiffany Brazzell.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first in this series, but this installment really showed Ms. Brazzell coming into her own as an author. I suspect we will see many more great works from her in the future.
The narrator, Emily Lawrence, should also be commended. I don’t often look into the narrator’s body of work, but she impressed me. A narrator can either elevate or diminish an authors work. She was a great fit for this tale.

Historia
US Navy Seal Lieutenant Tom Norris, on three separate occasions over a four-day period, with no sleep, went behind enemy lines to rescue two downed air force pilots. Using stealth tactics, he was able to get though or around hundreds of North Vietnamese to rescue one pilot. The second pilot - hungry, thirsty, and having lost 40 pounds - was disoriented and unable to help in his rescue. Norris, with the help of one Vietnamese Seal, was able to safely bring the pilot back inside US lines.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-06-22
I was excited to learn about these heroes. But first the audio quality sounded like it was recorded in a tile bathroom. I thought, “No worries. I can deal with that. I still want to hear these stories.”
Then, the author started interjecting his own political views into the story. I thought that was disrespectful to the men who he was trying to honor. These stories should be just about the men who served America. An America with patriots on both sides of the isle. In bringing his own partisan views into it he was making it about himself. Totally disrespectful. I opted to end the listening and pick something that was more thoughtfully written.

1986, Mobile, Alabama. A 14-year-old girl is awakened by the unmistakable sound of gunfire. On the front lawn, her father has shot and killed her mother before turning the gun on himself. Allison Moorer would grow up to be an award-winning musician, with her songs likened to "a Southern accent: eight miles an hour, deliberate, and very dangerous to underestimate" (Rolling Stone).

Great, but unnecessarily derivative
Revisado: 07-09-20
I’m loving this series, but the authors include derivative elements when they are obviously talented enough not to. So many of the battles in this series are just retellings of historical battles: Mogadishu, The Battle of Camp Keating etc...
Even more distracting are the parallels to Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
Tri-Fighters=Tie Fighters
Goth Sullus=Darth Vader
Crux=Force
One ring to rule them all=One ring to rule them all
Tyrus Rechs=Boba Fett or The Mandalorian
Wraith=Han Solo
All totally unnecessary and distracting to an otherwise great series.

Historia
Rice Moore is just beginning to think his troubles are behind him. He’s found a job protecting a remote forest preserve in Virginian Appalachia where his main responsibilities include tracking wildlife and refurbishing cabins. It’s hard work, and totally solitary - perfect to hide away from the Mexican drug cartels he betrayed back in Arizona. But when Rice finds the carcass of a bear killed on the grounds, the quiet solitude he’s so desperately sought is suddenly at risk.

Superb
Revisado: 03-28-20
An amazing book. I loved that the author knew intimately the subtleties of nature, having obviously experienced it. So many authors write about nature and interacting with it in such a way as to illuminate the fact that they’ve never been out of a big city.
The characters were well fleshed out and believable. And the dialog? Outstanding. He captured, not only the way rural people speak, but also how they think. It would be easy to slip into cliche, but he didn’t.
I can’t wait to read his next books.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.
