unexpected twists and turns
Revisado: 02-20-25
I don't usually read murder mysteries but this one was exceptional. The narration was very good, story was believable and touched on some current issues that made me think. highly recommended.

Historia
Scotland, 1026 - Gruoch, descendant of the line of MacAlpin, should have been born into a life of ease. But fate is fickle. Her father's untimely death, rumored to have been plotted by King Malcolm, leaves her future uncertain and stained by the prophecy that she will avenge her family line. Escaping to one of the last strongholds of the old Celtic gods, Gruoch becomes an adept in arcane craft. Her encounters with the otherworld, however, suggest that magic runs stronger in Scotland than she ever imagined.

The shallowness of the story
Revisado: 09-27-24
This is only part of a desultory story. I struggled through anyway, and felt cheated at the end as there was no end. It seems set up just to make you buy the next book which I won't be doing - I'm not going to buy two more books and struggle through wondering around endlessly through shallow lives and cliches just to see how the story ends... maybe it would be fine for a teen audience.

Revisado: 08-11-24
I think the author is a good author, and writes well, but the story was excruciating to listen to. Way too much negative energy.

repetitive and unemaginative
Revisado: 04-29-24
this book felt like it was written by AI instead of the author. The original book of the series was wonderful, creative, and interesting. this book was just all repetitive fighting. I won't get any more of the series, I can't imagine how the author could have written six lengthy books in a series in just a year without AI having a hand. like I say, the first book in the series was fabulous and I was expecting more like that.

Historia
In the Old Country, they called them the Gentry: ancient spirits of the land, magical, amoral, and dangerous. When the Irish emigrated to North America, some of the Gentry followed...only to find that the New World already had spirits of its own, called manitou and other such names by the Native tribes. Now generations have passed, and the Irish have made homes in the new land, but the Gentry still wander homeless on the city streets. Gathering in the city shadows, they bide their time and dream of power.

wonderful story, narrator needs volume control
Revisado: 08-10-23
Narrator makes it very difficult to listen to this wonderful story. She gets so loud and sharp it hurts your ears and then you can't even hear the very next sentence because her volume goes down to a whisper. She needs to learn more consistency. This happens throughout the whole story and I found myself turning the volume up and down and up and down and repeating something I couldn't hear and then getting my eardrums blasted by the next sentence. The story is so good or I would have never been able to finish it with this particular narrator.

Not one shred of happiness or joy
Revisado: 08-20-21
Unbalanced, this book is all suffering, murder, dark secrets and nothing else. Not a shred of anything good, happy or joyful. thought there might be some saving grace in the end but now I'm sorry that I read the whole thing. I don't think we can afford to add more suffering to the world and our own lives with books like this.

Narrator should have stuck with her own accent
Revisado: 05-03-21
Story was okay but the narrator made me struggle to finish the book. Would have been much better to hear her speak in her own accent instead of trying to put on a southern accent, which was not very believable and kind of annoying. Elizabeth Gilbert has written much better books.

Revisado: 11-05-20
overdramatic goblin voices and other impersonations detracted greatly from the story. The narrator is great when he's doing human voices and his others distracted from the story. I think he has the making of a good narrator if he just stops trying so hard.

For short-lived races like humans, space is dominated by the complicated, grandiose Mercatoria. To the Dwellers who may live billions of years, the galaxy consists of their gas-giant planets - the rest is debris. Fassin Taak is a Slow Seer privileged to work with the Dwellers of the gas-giant Nasqueron. His work consists of rummaging for data in their vast, disorganised memories and libraries. Unfortunately, without knowing it, he's come close to an ancient secret of unimaginable importance.
