I heard about this series on the Genealogy Gems Podcast. It was a great, engaging story all around, with an especially interesting angle to the genealogist or family historian. It presents great deta. il and character development that help to bring the reader/listener right into the scene. The characters feel like family and are very relatable. Plus, the narrator’s performance was wonderful. I’m looking forward to listening to the next book in the series. As a genealogy enthusiast, I’m thrilled to connect with Jefferson Tate’s character and am hoping to find more books written from this perspective.

My 10-year-old daughter and I chose The Flying Flamingo Sisters as a book to listen to together. It was fantastic! My daughter keeps asking for me to see if it is a series - she wants more. The sound effects, like the radio reports and airplane engines help bring the story to life. The three sisters are lovable, well-defined characters. They squabble just like sisters do, yet are able to come together and bravely adventure into unknown territory. Excellent lessons on family, choices, forgiveness, and teamwork.

A family's journey to heal generational trauma

I highly recommend this Audible Original, especially to anyone who has a history of family trauma or is interested in family systems (psychiatrists, therapists, counselors, rabbis, pastors, etc.). The story is shared in an interactive way, with the perspective of several different family members. As the story progresses, the audience begins to understand the context as well as the impact of the original trauma of kidnapping upon generations going forward. It was healing for me to listen to and helped me to reflect on the impact of trauma in my own family. This is an audiobook I will listen to several times and recommend to others.

My 9-year-old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this Audible Original book. It is a coming of age fantasy story about a girl with magical musical talent. Raised by her nonmusical grandmother, she struggles to accept the death of her mother and abandonment of her father. Most of all, she struggles to accept herself and see her talent. Well-developed characters, beautiful music performances, and a lively reading help to bring the listener into the story. I recommend this audiobook for tweens, teens and their parents.

Learn good genealogy research methods through great stories

I was pleasantly surprised by this Great Course on genealogy. I was looking to learn better research methods and expected a “dry” research audiobook. However, John Philip Colletta does an excellent job of balancing strong research methods and ideas with personal examples through storytelling. Discovering Your Roots is both effective genealogy teaching and entertaining. Colletta’s stories draw the listener into the stories, which makes learning fun. His humbleness makes the research tasks manageable. Highly recommend to beginner and intermediate genealogists/family historians.

Helpful, clear pathway for survivors of incest and childhood sexual abuse

The author shares her own story of surviving and recovering from incest, as well as provides a clear pathway through recovery from childhood sexual abuse. The section with journaling prompts helps to direct journaling in a healthy, growth-oriented way. The book helped to gain a clearer picture of what made childhood dysfunctional and abusive. I’m thankful for the audiobook but wish the narrator’s voice would have more personality (and less clinical sounding).

My therapist requested that I read this book to help me gain the skills to fight my debilitating anxiety and panic. I found it particularly helpful to listen to the audiobook because I was able to take in the information more objectively than "hearing" my own voice while reading. I was able to specifically identify reasons why my anxiety is keeping me from action, the underlying thoughts, and exercises to step out of my anxiety bit by bit. I will both listen to this audiobook and read the book again to help the information further sink in.

I purchased this book for insight into the process of maturity because I missed many of these stages as an adult child of alcoholics. When I saw it on Audible, I thought this would be a good book to listen to as well as read in paperback.

I found myself going back and replaying certain sections to help them sink in. This was so helpful! Listening to the authors read gave me the sense that they were right beside me, individually and lovingly coaching me. One surprise I experienced was that different wording and explanation of concepts/truths helped me immensely in areas of my recovery program where I was stuck.

The Honest, Noncondemning Approach to Homemaking I Needed

I was pleasantly surprised by this book - it's honest, noncondemning, reality-based, and grace-based advice. I have it in hardcover and am so glad I got to listen to it as well. For me, listening provided the comfort, the "you're not alone in this struggle and it's okay," that is helping me to get beyond my fear of failure as a homemaker and offer myself grace to take it one step at a time. I have mixed feelings about the author reading this book. While it helped it feel more like a conversation, at times I wished there was more variation. Thank you, Crystal Paine, for this book!
