Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Where's the sequel?
Revisado: 02-01-25
very techy so it's not a book that I can recommend to all my friends but it certainly held me captive throughout. Loved the friendly alien but I was anticipating sabotage somewhere in the storyline. Needless to say, there is a happy ever after but I would love to know what happened on earth and that he should go back there to share his findings.

Though her ties to Ireland remain stronger than those that hold her to her new land and home, she has not returned in decades.

A life of poor decisions
Revisado: 08-24-24
Loved the book but didn't like the way it ended.
The next book has to be like the movie Sliding Doors when we get a Taste of what really could happen if in the book Brooklyn, she stayed in Ireland and followed through.
Many women might identity with the passive form of DV which was the undercurrent of mid-century marriage. That all men cheat and wives are meant to turn a blind eye. Treated like a second class citizen in her husband's family. At least she had the love and respect of her kids.
I don't think she would also commit adultery (because good Irish women would never do that). But I think she would form an escape plan to leave her husband for another man. A woman scorned and all that.
But the ending demonstrates just another part of a life of missed opportunity.
This Irish woman (me) married to an American truly identified with this character

Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes "interesting" - the last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed, and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is a story of inaction with enormous consequences.

Wonder what the movie will be like
Revisado: 12-16-23
This was interestingly written with only people's titles and not their names. it led to me being confused at times as to who the author was referring to...the Milkman or the real Milkman? But I haven't read anything else like this so it was refreshingly different. There were many themes running throughout the book but the main one being control, one person over another.
The power that someone yields was shown as temporary in many instances throughout the narrative even if it sadly led to death.
Having first hand knowledge of the place and time the book was set in made me reflect and consider my own upbringing. Not to mention that I live on the other side of the world now, so for some readers this might sound like fantasy but for me it was a harsh reality of Belfast during the troubles.
I've been reading a lot of fiction by Northern ireland authors and really enjoyed the feminine POV. I would love this book to be turned into a movie .

For Cal, some of the choices are devastatingly simple.... He can work in an abattoir that nauseates him or join the dole queue; he can brood on his past or plan a future with Marcella. Springing out of the fear and violence of Ulster, Cal is a haunting love story in a land were tenderness and innocence can only flicker briefly in the dark.

Retribution vs Restitution
Revisado: 12-01-23
it's unusual when an author describes situations that are personal to you and when you think that sharing it would make you a weirdo. That's what made this book great for me.
I see it as a love story that could be set anywhere in any time period because there's always going to be negative interference somewhere along the way.
From a feminine perspective, she was desperate for a shag, ignoring red flags. Stooping to conquer her urges.
I liked the ending because it ended with hope for a future where we all pay the price for retribution

Historia
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

Bullets shielded by plot armor
Revisado: 10-05-23
This was my first Adrian McKinty book and third in a series of Northern Ireland authors I've been listening to. Drawing from his time spent in Australia helped give this book an authentic feel for the global reader, but I'm sure any Australian sampling this book might have something else to say. Being from N.I. I had trouble with the Narrators Ballymena accent. What should have sounded like Liam Neeson (I will find you...) came across as a Kentucky Scotsman. Liam Neeson is from Ballymena.
But the plot armor abounded ....shelter? water? a car with a snorkel?
I wanted a twist where the dad Tom had taken them there to be executed by the O'Neill family, and then things went terribly wrong.
On the bright side, this was a really great novel with wonderful poetic lines thrown in as descriptors. I will definitely add my Adrian McKinty to my reading list.

An Atmospheric Must Read
Revisado: 09-30-23
Okay, so I happened upon this book as part of dive into books by authors from Northern Ireland. Now, Eve Bunting has made residence in Southern California similar to myself, so this was the appeal to start with this one.
Unlike other Northern Ireland authors, this book is set in Scotland. It was historical fiction and created an atmosphere of suspense. Really enjoyed this book, even though it is very short. It didn't stray from the storyline and had a romantic twist to the tale at the conclusion.

This Belfast Gal was unimpressed
Revisado: 09-30-23
Okay, I chose this book as part of my authors from Northern Ireland project and this book because it was one of Colin Bateman's sentinel works.
Well, growing up in NI during "The Troubles," I was going to be suspicious of the authenticity. Yes, Colin, you know your stuff. But come on! I figured out the title by Chaper 3!
I enjoyed his writing style but don't like storylines where there is infidelity and stereotyping of Ulstermen as alcoholics. Next time I'm in Laveries, I'll look out for Colin Bateman and tell him to his face.
It didn't hold my attention, but I probably would read more Bateman, so 3 stars for me. Also, next time, have a real Norn Iron person narrate. I cringed at the pronunciations.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Buy me a ticket to Savanah now!
Revisado: 09-30-23
I read this book in 2023 because after watching Aerial America's Georgia episode on the Smithsonian Channel, I was completely smitten of their presentation of the city of Savanah.Yes, I watched the movie decades ago but barely remembered it.
Berendt writes with a journalistic style, giving us facts intertwined with interesting stories offering glimpses of Savanah's historical past. Yes, I could find the same by reading Wikipedia, but the author weaves the connections needed to strengthen his nonfiction novel. And who doesn't love this oxymoron? Especially when it fits with the quirky characters.
In addition to the residents, the city itself is described in detail, and I agree with others who suggest this book is a love tetter to Savanah. The book centers around Jim Williams. We may never know what really happened that night, but that makes the book even more intriguing.
Anyway, I'm off to Atlanta next year, and I will definitely be taking the road to Savanah, and if a book can move you to visit a city then it's a great book in my opinion.

A case that not only reveals dark secrets about the past, but has deadly implications for the future.

Marco?
Revisado: 10-29-22
Can we have more of Marco please?
I want to know what he's up to and other adventures involving him. Everyone likes a Robin Hood type character, bad boy turned good. We cheered for him the whole book through- was Tilda's family going to adopt him? (too smooshy), Would he get awarded a scholarship to complete his education at an upper crust boarding school? (too much eye rolling).
Just more please.
