Historia
In the first volume in the Penguin History of the United States series, edited by Eric Foner, Alan Taylor challenges the traditional story of colonial history by examining the many cultures that helped make America, from the native inhabitants from millennia past through the decades of Western colonization and conquest and across the entire continent, all the way to the Pacific coast.

Very informative
Revisado: 06-13-24
I deeply appreciate the scholarship of this work. The author covers all of the colonizers of America font just the English & Spanish and explores the differences between the various colonial strategies. He also vividly describes the effects of colonization on the indigenous peoples. Lots of new histogram me. Not particularly entertaining but quite informative.

Trite characters, mediocre writing
Revisado: 10-15-23
A friend recommended this series and I'm a few books in now but not sure I'll continue. The characters have stock predictable reactions, the writing style is mediocre. Maybe I've been spoiled by Anthony Horowitz, Robert Galbraith, and Mick Herron.

Historia
Art T. Burton sifts through fact and legend to discover the truth about one of the most outstanding peace officers in late 19th-century America - and perhaps the greatest lawman of the Wild West era. Fluent in Creek and other Southern native languages, physically powerful, skilled with firearms, and a master of disguise, Bass Reeves was exceptionally adept at apprehending fugitives and outlaws, and his exploits were legendary in Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Great history but be prepared
Revisado: 10-15-23
I'm from Oklahoma and had never heard of Bass Reeves until quite recently. I was pleased to find a book with so much detail about him. HOWEVER, this reads a bit like a PhD thesis rather than a popular history. It would be nice to see what an accomplished creative non-fiction writer could do with the details laid out here. Reeves' story would also make a great movie or TV mini-series.

Historia
The 15th century saw the longest and bloodiest series of civil wars in British history. The crown of England changed hands five times as two branches of the Plantagenet dynasty fought to the death for the right to rule. Now, celebrated historian Dan Jones describes how the longest reigning British royal family tore itself apart until it was finally replaced by the Tudors. Some of the greatest heroes and villains in history were thrown together in these turbulent times.

Fascinating story, poorly told
Revisado: 10-24-22
The author's family story is fascinating and shows the power of genetic DNA to unravel family secrets. However, as other reviewers have noted, the monotone narration of this books is difficult to listen to for very long. I would add that the writing is extremely redundant. The author repeats the same information dozens of times and uses some phrasing over and over. This book could have benefited from a good editor. Eliminating all the repetition could have shorted the book 20% at least. That said, n the hands of a good writer this story could be a best seller or hit TV miniseries.

Historia
In The Lost Family, journalist Libby Copeland investigates what happens when we embark on a vast social experiment with little understanding of the ramifications. Copeland explores the culture of genealogy buffs, the science of DNA, and the business of companies like Ancestry and 23andMe, all while tracing the story of one woman, her unusual results, and a relentless methodical drive for answers that becomes a thoroughly modern genetic detective story.

Overview of ethics of genetic DNA testing
Revisado: 10-24-22
This book is an entertaining and well written overview of the ethical questions raised by genetic DNA testing. I especially appreciate the advice that one shouldn't enter into such testing lightly. There is no way to know in advance if you will like what a DNA test tells you.

Decent biography, not particularly revealing
Revisado: 01-01-18
Would you try another book from Sally Bedell Smith and/or Rosalyn Landor?
Rosalyn Landor's narration is first rate. The book itself is interesting for it's details about the queen's official public life, but lacking in behind the scenes details. It almost seems to respectful of the royal family's privacy.
Would you recommend Elizabeth the Queen to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, but only for the most ardent Anglophiles and royalty fans.
What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Great reader, easy to understand and very proper English accent. She does other voices just well enough to make a distinction without being distracting or overwrought.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
It makes an interesting companion read to the Netflix series The Crown.

Great performance, good story
Revisado: 01-01-18
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend the book based on performance and story. It is also set in my home state of Minnesota with plenty of recognizable locations.
If you’ve listened to books by Allen Eskens before, how does this one compare?
This was my first Eskens book.
Which scene was your favorite?
I loved the scenes with the main character's brother and girlfriend. A charming pair of characters.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The dysfunctional mother and her neglect of her special needs child was sad.
Any additional comments?
Good story, well told with plenty of local color.
