Historia
In 1936, George Orwell went to Spain to report on the civil war and instead joined the P.O.U.M. militia to fight against the Fascists. In this now justly famous account of his experience, he describes both the bleak and the comic aspects of trench warfare on the Aragon front, the Barcelona uprising in May 1937, his nearly fatal wounding just two weeks later, and his escape from Barcelona into France after the P.O.U.M. was suppressed.

Interesting firsthand account of the Spanish Civil
Revisado: 03-08-21
I wanted to know more about the Spanish Civil War, and I received more insight into it thanks to Orwell's "you are there" narration. I felt like I was in the trenches with him.
The only thing that irritated me was the narrator's mispronunciation of Spanish words and names. I didn't expect him to be fluent in the language, but he should have learned how to pronounce it.

Historia
In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

Grand story
Revisado: 03-07-21
Although basically about Jewish history fictionalized, it was more to me a history of religion. I gained much insight, and it helped to cement my view of religion as sociology and psychology.
For whatever reason, the history of the Jewish people is inspirational if not often tragic. This novel gives a clue as to why that may be so.
Despite what many reviewers said about the narration, I found it competent and easy to listen to.

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Historia
Barbara Demick's Nothing to Envy follows the lives of six North Koreans over fifteen years - a chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung and the unchallenged rise to power of his son, Kim Jong-il, and the devastation of a far-ranging famine that killed one-fifth of the population. Taking us into a landscape never before seen, Demick brings to life what it means to be an average Korean citizen, living under the most repressive totalitarian regime today.

Sad but revealing
Revisado: 05-27-16
I knew the North Korean regime is totalitarian, but these true stories of escapees are out of the worst of dystopian literature. The more I listened, the angrier I became. I feel so bad for the North Koreans. We invaded Iraq, but they did not hold the a candle to the evil of the North Korean regime. But then, N.K. has nukes and no oil.

Historia
America's first families are unknowable in many ways. No one has insight into their true character like the people who serve their meals and make their beds every day. Full of stories and details by turns dramatic, humorous, and heartwarming, The Residence reveals daily life in the White House as it is really lived through the voices of the maids, butlers, cooks, florists, doormen, engineers, and others who tend to the needs of the president and first family.

Behind the scenes at the White House
Revisado: 03-20-16
I have studied the Presidents since I was a kid. I found it very interesting to learn about the people who really run the White House and make it work. It was also fascinating to hear about the personalities of the Presidents and their families.

I felt like I was in Paris and didn't want the book to end. Having visited this great city, I was able to visualize many of the places. It was historical fiction at its best! The only thing I would have liked better is if the book proceeded completely chronologically..

Historia
Morten Storm was an unlikely Jihadi. A six-foot-one red-haired Dane, Storm spent his teens in and out of trouble. A book about the Prophet Mohammed prompted his conversion to Islam, and Storm sought purpose in a community of believers. He attended a militant madrasah in Yemen, named his son Osama, and became close friends with Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born terrorist cleric. But after a decade of Jihadi life, he not only repudiated extremism but, in a quest for atonement, became a double agent for the CIA and British and Danish intelligence.
