Historia
Days after the dawn of Y2K, beautiful, charismatic nineteen-year-old Karlie Richards is found brutally murdered in her campus apartment. Two decades later, those who knew Karlie—and those who just knew of her—remain consumed by her death. Among them is her freshman year roommate, Joy, now middle-aged and mid-divorce, living in the same college town and desperate for a new beginning. Jumping between 2019 and 1999, Bright and Tender Dark takes us from the era of Reddit threads and online obsession to the evangelism-infused culture of the late ’90s to reveal what really happened to Karlie.

Awful narration made this unlistenable
Revisado: 04-12-25
I struggled through to the end but couldn’t get past the narrator’s unnatural pauses and cadence, and provocative-sounding lilt at the end of certain sentences. The story might’ve been fine but I couldn’t tell. Probably worth a read but not a listen.

It's wedding season on Nantucket. The beautiful island is overrun with summer people - an annual source of aggravation for year-round residents. When one lavish wedding ends in disaster before it can even begin - with the bride-to-be discovered dead in Nantucket Harbor just hours before the ceremony - everyone in the wedding party is suddenly a suspect. As Chief of Police Ed Kapenash digs into the best man, the maid of honor, the groom's famous mystery novelist mother, and even a member of his own family, the chief discovers that every wedding is a minefield - and no couple is perfect.

Narration is AWFUL
Revisado: 09-13-24
Decent plot but the writing is super cringey, the language is old-fashioned (who says “they slipped her a Mickey” unless you’re a 1920s wise guy?!) and the characters are caricatures. The narration? Lifeless. Probably a case where the movie is way better than the book it’s based on.

Now. Kathleen Rosenberg is okay with her ordinary existence, and leaving her pop star image in the past. That is, until Cal Kirby shows up with the opportunity of her dreams—a starring role in the Broadway show he’s directing and a chance to perform the way she’s always wanted. The two haven’t spoken since the joint destruction of their careers, and each of them blames the other, making their reunion a tense battle of wits and egos.

I really wanted to like this
Revisado: 06-09-23
And I really wanted to like the MCs. They played victim too well for my taste. Seems like a totally different author than the Elissa Sussman who wrote Funny You Should Ask (which I loved!). The writing here was sappy and the narration was even sappier—no subtlety or range in delivery. The worst of the narrator’s voices was Ryan’s, which sounded a little cartoonish.

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Revisado: 04-30-23
As always, the writing is flawless and the banter is on point. But I don’t think I’ve ever sobbed over past Emily Henry characters or their arcs. This. Book. Gutted me. Yes, a lot of the MCs’ misunderstandings could’ve totally been avoided—but then we wouldn’t have a story would we?

It’s the week before her wedding, and all of Eliza’s meticulous planning is about to pay off. But as the big day approaches, secrets from Eliza’s past attending an Evangelical college start to throw her true motives into question. Who exactly is Eliza Bennett and what does she really want?

I am breathless having just finished this. Fantastic story, wonderfully brought to life by Kristen Sieh. If this doesn’t get picked up by Netflix, they’re missing out.

The best slow burn romance I’ve read in awhile. And with such well-developed characters. Already fantasizing about who would be cast as Becca and Charlie ❤️

Zoë Frixos gets the whole love song thing. Truly, she does. As an editor at a major music magazine, it's part of her job description. But love? Let's just say Zoë's been a bit offbeat in that department. After falling hard for her best friend, Simon, at 13 and missing every chance to tell him how she felt before he left town, Zoë came to one grand conclusion: Love stinks. Twenty years later, Simon is returning to London, newly single and as charming as ever, and Zoë vows to take her second chance.

Worth the credit!
Revisado: 02-08-23
Was initially iffy about this but so glad I spent the credit. For a closed door romance, one of the MC’s love interests was written like he gave off heat. *Swoon* And the narration was absolute perfection.

Early in her life, Josephine Malone learned the hard way that there was only one person she could love and trust: her grandmother, Lydia Malone. Out of necessity, unconsciously and very successfully, Josephine donned a disguise to keep all others at bay. She led a globetrotting lifestyle on the fringes of the fashion and music elite, but she kept herself distant. While Josephine was trotting the globe, retired boxer Jake Spear was living in the same small town as Lydia.

Wasted a credit. And quit 4 hours in.
Revisado: 07-24-22
Thus began my cringing at the liberal use of the words “thus” (see what I did there?) and “babe.” No one actually talks like this irl. It’s like the characters were play-acting at being a fashion assistant and a roughneck, thanks to the narrow and misguided vocabularies the author gave them. Apparently, cultured people say “tthus” and “therefore” and blue-collars call someone they’ve just met “babe” 24\7.

Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Might be Emily Henry’s best yet
Revisado: 05-08-22
This book gutted me. Great enemies-to-lovers plot but even better sisters-as-soulmates subplot. And, as always, Emily Henry’s main characters are sharp and funny as hell. Makes me wanna be friends with them if only they were real.

Former child actor Fiona St. James dropped out of the spotlight after a spectacularly public crash and burn. The tabloids called her crazy and self-destructive and said she’d lost her mind. Now in her late twenties, Fiona believes her humiliating past is firmly behind her. She’s finally regained a modicum of privacy, and she won’t let anything—or anyone—mess it up.

This. Book. 🙌🏼
Revisado: 04-29-22
Great story. Love how the characters and dialogue went from snarky (seriously caught myself literally laughing out loud) to sobering and back again throughout the book. Checks all my rom com boxes: depth, wit and Julia Whelan. That woman is pure magic.
