Interesting, although not terribly in-depth quick history of Ireland
Revisado: 02-08-24
first of all, if you’re going to listen to this, listen to it at 1.2. If you listen to it at the rate that it is recorded, it sounds like somebody reading to a third grader.
While she had some very interesting information, she fell into the tendency of blending actual history with mythology and literature, which may be somebody’s cup of tea. It is not mine. I did not find it terribly in-depth, although I did like her approach of catering Irish history to Irish Americans.

The Ringworld is a landmark engineering achievement, a flat band 3-million-times the surface area of Earth, encircling a distant star. Home to trillions of inhabitants, not all of which are human, and host to amazing technological wonders, the Ringworld is unique in all of the universe.

Standard sequel to a sequel to a sequel
Revisado: 07-15-23
I read Ring World many years ago, and I’ve always wanted to read the follow up books, which thanks to Audible I was able to do. However, it follows the standard pattern of quality of most sequels the farther away it gets from the original book the worse they get. this was an acceptable wrapup to the saga, although far from the best book I’ve ever read. Did not care for the narration either. Spoiler alert: the fifth book is by far worse.

Historia
What would you do if you knew your life's potential? That's the question facing the residents of Deerfield, Louisiana, when the DNAMIX machine appears in their local grocery store. It's nothing to look at, really—it resembles a plain photo booth. But its promise is amazing: With just a quick swab of your cheek and two dollars, the device claims to use the science of DNA to tell you your life's potential. With enough credibility to make the townspeople curious, soon the former teachers, nurses, and shopkeepers of Deerfield are abruptly changing course to pursue their destinies.

What I look for in fiction.
Revisado: 06-03-23
When I read fiction, which is not my preferred genre, I look for characters I want to actually spend time with. I burned through this book in 3 days because i really liked these characters. (with the possible exception of one which I thought was too much of a cliche and not very well developed .).
To begin with, this is not the Netflix series. Netflix has taken two of the main characters and then altered just about every other character in the book. This is not a bad thing, it is just not the same thing as the book. As an example, the book doesn’t focus much on the machine, while the series seems to shroud it in some great mystery.
I was a little disappointed in the ending because it felt like it just dropped the other characters without really wrapping their stories.
If you are looking for a chance to spend some time with some truly human interactions, I definitely would recommend it.

Historia
Weimar Germany brings to life an era of unmatched creativity in the 20th century - one whose influence and inspiration still resonate today. Eric Weitz has written the authoritative history that this fascinating and complex period deserves, and he illuminates the uniquely progressive achievements and even greater promise of the Weimar Republic. Weimar Germany also shows that beneath its glossy veneer lay political turmoil that ultimately led to the demise of the republic and the rise of the radical right.

The history of Weimar Germany, that I have been looking for.

This is a brilliant coverage of the years between the world wars. It is a complete history of the politics, economics, art, and philosophy that explains much even about our current world today.

Historia
In the early morning of June 1, 1921, a White mob marched across the train tracks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and into its predominantly Black Greenwood District - a thriving, affluent neighborhood known as America's Black Wall Street. They brought with them firearms, gasoline, and explosives. In a few short hours, they'd razed 35 square blocks to the ground, leaving hundreds dead. The Tulsa Race Massacre is one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in US history. But how did it come to pass?

Interesting account of a little known part of America’s history.
Revisado: 05-15-22
I consider myself fairly well read when it comes to history, however I did not become aware of the Tulsa race riots until a few years ago, so I was very interested when I found this book. I thought the author did a good job of building the background to the riots. She covered not only the post- Civil War struggles of African-Americans, but the singular role that America‘s policy toward Native Americans plays in the history of the Oklahoma territory as well. I was generally pleased with the book, but disappointed with the afterword section when she got away from a non-biased presentation of facts. She wraps up the book with what I feel is an over long section which was preachy and overly political. When I read history, I prefer the facts and information, as well as the applications. However, I felt this book went beyond an objective analysis of the events. I still enjoyed the book and give it a strong B or B plus.

Historia
The Weimar Republic has become a byword for a failed, tragic, political experiment. The official period of its existence, 1919-1933, marked the interwar years in Germany and their related uncertainty, chaos, and the state’s ultimate collapse. Historians have found the roots of Nazism embedded in the Weimar years and that in the final analysis, Weimar politicians voluntarily handed over power to the man who wrought destruction on an epic scale, Adolf Hitler.

Needs a good editor and a good fact checker
Revisado: 02-23-20
I am very familiar with the history of Germany in the World War eras. (Among multiple histories of the period, I have read Rise and Fall of the Third Reich three times), so I feel I have some validity in saying this book is poorly written, slim on information and what information it has is questionable. It seems to build to a screed claiming that the minute the Nazis took power they took everybody’s guns away. Any amount of research on the internet will show that this is a dubious statement at best. This book seems to have an agenda in mind. I would like my 2 hours and my $5 back. And it has left a bad taste in my mouth regarding Audible original productions.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

An intense incredible story.
Revisado: 12-14-19
being of Irish American extraction and and inveterate reader of history books, I have only recently gotten interested in Irish history, prompted by a recent trip to Ireland. I had grown-up hearing the news of “the troubles“ but had relatively low interest in learning more about it. It just seemed to me that Catholic and protestant Irish were always killing each other. after reading several histories of Ireland, I thought it would be beneficial to focus on the more current history. this book more than satisfied my desire for information about this era. It is incredibly well researched, organized and thoughtful. at times the story it tells is so real that I was concerned about knowing too much about Irish history. For anyone in my situation or if you are looking for a good serious read on relatively current history, I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. After I finish this review, I am going to start listening to it again. and as a sidenote if you haven’t visited Ireland, you owe it to yourself to do so. This book will make the experience even more meaningful.

Historia
An avid member of the Hitler Youth in 1940s Vienna, Johannes Betzler discovers his parents are hiding a Jewish girl named Elsa behind a false wall in their home. His initial horror turns to interest - then love and obsession. After his parents disappear, Johannes is the only one aware of Elsa's existence in the house and the only one responsible for her fate. By turns disturbing and blackly comic, Christine Leunens' captivating and masterful novel examines this world of truth and lies, laying bare the darkest corners of the human soul.

A book with two separate personalities
Revisado: 11-30-19
I got this book because of the movie Jojo rabbit which was “inspired” buy this book. I was fully aware that that means it is not a movie about the book, just that the director took the ideas from the book and ran his own direction. That being said I read this in one sitting. It is a book with two distinct personalities. The first half takes it’s cue from “private lives of the master race“ but the second half turns into A drawn out vision of a dysfunctional relationship between two people that you don’t want to know. I’m not sure what the author was planning when she started this book but apparently she decided to take a sharp turn about halfway through and head in a different direction. I am not a literary critic by any means but the best interpretation I can give on the second half of this book is that it somehow represents post World War II Germany but other than that I found it relatively taxing to endure. I found the first half populated by way more interesting characters, but they are all gone before the second half. I am not sure who I would recommend this book to, I would recommend the first half of the book to World War II fiction fans, the second half to Jerry Springer fans. And by the way, The movie is based on the first half…

What a disappointment
Revisado: 11-28-19
Before you purchase this audiobook, please be aware it is not a book. It is a Radio broadcast in 240 5-minute episodes… Yes that many... which creates a very “connect the dots “approach to history. This left me filling in the spaces between the episodes based on what I had previously read elsewhere. It is also plagued by numerous musical interlude’s and, a personal pet peeve, dramatizations. The information presented incredible, but disjointed. I was looking for a straightforward total history of Ireland, but what I got was a disjointed series of not necessarily chronological episodes. These episodes also glossed over many events without going into depth or spent an inordinate amount of time on minor issues. It also stopped right before World War II started. I continue to be frustrated and trying to find a complete history of Ireland, and this audio broadcast is not it. This probably works as a 5-minute daily radio program, but Definitely the most disappointing purchase I have made from Audible.
